Let them eat cake... and bread, too at Cafe of Joy
By Ms. Priya Bala
A tiny cafe in Whitefield is serving German-style breads and cakes and other goodies – all freshly baked on the premises
Cafe of Joy is Joy Basu’s long-time dream turned to reality. This management consultant had always wanted to run a small food outlet, where she would not only serve good food, but also enjoy interacting with customers. She put a stint in Germany to good use and signed up for an intensive course in bread-making in Heidelberg. Thus equipped, she’s opened this little cafe, serving German-style breads, cakes and light lunches of sandwiches, salads, sausages and the like.
You enter through a wicker gate and a mauve door, to the welcoming aroma of baking bread. The breads here are nothing like your average sliced loaf or even the stuff from some of the bakery chains. These are breads with individuality and character – with body, texture and loads of flavour. There are rustic millet breads, breads flecked with carrot and seeds, sourdough and Bavarian farmer’s loaves. The assortment changes every day and the loaves are usually gone in quick time.
Joy’s cafe menu also includes an excellent cinnamon roll and lovely, buttery brioche. Also, blueberry and chocolate chip muffins, tea cakes, German cheesecake made with quark and topped with peach slices. I tasted also an unusual zucchini cake – not unlike a carrot cake – with spices, nuts and cream cheese. Cafe of Joy’s pastries are all home-style, satisfying and not too sweet either. If you do want a rich, chocolate hit, however, there are cakes like the Kit Kat Joy.
Cafe of Joy can cater to special requests such as gluten-free and also home delivers in the Whitefield area. You can also host a kiddie party here, where they can make mini pizzas or decorate cupcakes.
If you have been looking for good bread, Cafe of Joy will make you happy, to be sure.
