FUTURE STARS: Youngsters Dazzle at Varrick’s Maiden Juvenile Art Music Expo
The premier edition of the Juvenile Art Music Expo, a concept driven by James Varrick Armaah, took place at the Christ the King Parish Hall on the morning of Constitution Day.
The event, organised by Varrick Productions and Think Media Expert, a media training/education and production company, was attended by choral and classical music enthusiasts and parents, as well as partner media organisations including Joy News and Choral Music TV.
The first Juvenile Art Music Expo, in James Armaah’s words, represented the “small beginnings” of a very great idea. Making a case for the arts as a way of fostering social cohesion and harmony, the founder of Harmonious Chorale went on to state his motivation for encouraging young musical talents.
Primarily driven by the concern that this type of music - choral and classical music as experienced in Ghana today - could die if it isn’t successfully transferred to and encouraged in the next generation, Mr. Armaah’s effort to helping to shed light on the talent of young musicians and to build their capacity has resulted in this initiative.
In his own words, this project is meant to “groom people for the future”, so “when some of us are old, we will still have people playing our favourite music”.
Among the talents displayed at the concert hall were 18 year old flautist Michael Amoah, who performed theme music from The Secret Garden and Schubert’s Ave Maria, 13 year old John Saade who played Handel’s “Surely He Hath Borne Our Grief” as a solo piece on a keyboard, and accompanied the Corpus Christi Children’s Choir in performing that same composer’s “And He Shall Purify”.
The children from Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Sakumono fielded an impressive cohort of over 40 choristers and left some members of the audience on their feet after their opening performance. Led by Blessed Yawson and later conducted by Rev. Fr. Akpabli, the choir also performed GF Handel’s “And the Glory of the Lord”, the hymn “The Lord’s My Shepherd” to a tune written by their music director, and James Armaah’s highlife “Praise Him”.
The other children’s choir in attendance was the Garrison Children’s Voices, a choir from the Garrison Methodist Presbyterian Church at Burma Camp and led by Harmonious Chorale’s Edward Opare-Addo.
Whereas most of the young musicians performed pieces from Ghana’s standard choral repertoire, some of the stand-out performances of classical pieces included 17 year old Robert Onumah’s selection of a fugue from JS Bach’s “The Well Tempered Clavier” and an invention from the same composer, and two student piano pieces from Louise Farrenc and Clementi, performed by 13 year old Lois Ansa Asare, daughter of Dominic of Mido Productions.
The concert also featured guest performances from former child prodigy Sita Korley and Joseph Ansa Asare. Also present at the occasion was Rev. Joyce Aryee, a patron of choral music and Mr. David Agyefi-Mensah, the CEO of Think Media Expert.

Resident choir of Salt and Light Music Ministry, The Harmonious Chorale Ghana, has lined up its major activities for the year 2019. In a letter sighted by Choral Music Ghana, Harmonious Chorale starts off what seems to be an event packed year with a Prayer Rally on Saturday 23rd February, 2019 at the Sunlodge Hotel, Tesano, Accra. This will be followed by Meditations on Easter on Saturday 13th April, 2019 also at the Sunlodge Hotel. The second and third Prayer Rally will be held on Saturday 13th July and Saturday 9th November respectively.
According to the letter, “By popular request, we are thrilled to present the third edition of Festival of Praise & Worship (FOPW 3), which will highlight Ghanaian compositions and honour the legacy of late Ghanaian composers and of course feature hymns from various Ghanaian churches arranged in modern style to suit the taste of our audience. It also promises to be a great time to enjoy anthems and highlifes". FOPW 3 is on 22 April, 2019 - Easter Monday. Venue is the Accra International Conference Centre.
The second edition of ChoralPraise with James Varrick Armaah is slated for 25th August 2019. This year’s edition is dubbed “Oye @ 10 Celebration”. Further details will be announced later.
October which is the anniversary month will welcome a debut event dubbed “Our Talents, Our Thanksgiving” (OTOT), marking the 12th anniversary of the choir. The date is Sunday 27th October 2019 at the Accra International Conference Centre.
Ending the year will be the return of Christmas Pageant on Sunday 15th December, 2019 at the National Theatre.
The choir will continue with its Senior High School project known as Harmonious Chorale Campus Ministry (HCCM) in some selected schools in the country. It will also embark on a Prisons project. Further details on these outreach programmes will be given in the course of the year.

Harmonious Chorale Announces 10th Anniversary
Harmonious Chorale, Ghana’s foremost choral ensemble, is 10 years this year. Founded as a quartet in 2005, and then as a choir in 2007, the group has grown under the leadership of James Varrick Armaah and Miss Joyce Aryee into a formidable brand that displays the best of contemporary Ghanaian choral music to the world.
The prestige of the choir has drawn a lot of interest from Ghanaians. Armaah’s group is largely recognised as one of the main contributors to the so-called choral music renaissance in the country.
A decade of dedication to music is not a small feet. As is now expected from the choir, the celebration of this milestone is grand. A total of six events spread across the year have been planned in the name of the celebration. Beginning this month, the series of concerts, charitable events and conferences promises a lot of excitement for enthusiasts.

Harmonious Chorale - Ghana, an international interdenominational choir located in Accra, celebrates a decade of God’s goodness. Patrons and lovers of the choral music fraternity in Ghana would be thrilled with what promises to be an exciting exhibition of choral finesse through its yearlong celebration.
The schedule of events for the year is as follows:

In addition to the aforementioned, the choir would make donations to selected orphanages, prisons and hospitals throughout the year.
Harmonious Chorale (HC) emerged on the choral music scene as a quartet in 2005 and gradually developed into a choral group in 2007. The choir has as its objective, the promotion of the compositions of Ghanaian and African choral and classical musicians as well as the performance of all kinds of choral music to evangelize and minister to the world. HC is blessed with a plethora of music talents with a membership of about fifty (50) singers and a unique “keyboard orchestra” of seven (7) who are well versed in the rudiments of music and general music appreciation.
HC, under the inspirational leadership of its Executive Chairperson, Rev. Dr. Joyce Rosalind Aryee, and Mr. James Varrick Armaah (Founder and Executive Director), continues to carve for itself a niche that has seen the choir adjudged as the best choral group in Ghana by the Christian Community Microfinance Limited Music Awards (CCML Music Awards) in 2014.
The song “Oye”, aka “Asɛm papa bia mate”, composed by the Executive Director was also recognised as the most popular song at the 2014 edition of the CCML Music Awards. The choir was once again adjudged the best choral group in Ghana at the Music of Ghanaian Origin (MOGO) awards held in 2015. HC is also recipient of the Excellence Leadership Awards (ExLA Awards) for Arts & Entertainment Personality of the Year (Gold Category) in 2015, as well as the best choral group of the year 2015, at the maiden edition of the Ghana Youth Choir Choral Festival Awards held on 21st September, 2016.
