While fans of The Civil Wars and the media have speculated on what Williams and White meant when they announced their hiatus in November 2012 with the wording “internal discord and irreconcilable differences of ambition,” Williams prefers to look back wistfully at the hard to explain songwriting and vocal magic of what the two created in their earlier days together. “Looking back, it all makes more sense now,” she says. “Having both been signed as solo artists with the highs and lows of label experiences behind us, we found ourselves in a similar spot in life despite our differences in age and life experiences. By the time we started writing together, we were beyond the notion that you could just find a way to fabricate a hit song.

“Both of us had been working on our craft long enough to realize that we felt genuinely inspired when we worked together,” Williams adds. “The original workshop was only two days, and when we took our songwriting beyond that environment, we realized that we gravitated towards duets that no one else would ever cut. They were too quirky and harmonic. Nobody in the mainstream rock world was doing duets like this. I think John Paul and I rounded off each other’s edges. My editing ability came in handy as did his confidence when he would hear a song and say, ‘If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.’ My female perspective blended well with his male point of view and we were just similar enough to tap into the tension of that. We both wanted to create something emotional and visceral and raw. I think we reached a lot of people with a sense of simplicity and heartache and our ability to tap into the human experience within the contest of pleasurable instrumentation and the blend of our voices.”  x

"I think there's been assumptions made that the band is over, but the reality is that John Paul and I have yet to talk about that," Williams said in a phone interview earlier this month. "It took the both of us to break it down, and I think that same energy is also there that if we put our heads together, we could meet in the middle and be an even stronger duo for it."

Despite the estrangement, Joy leaves the door wide open to a reunion in the not-so-distant future. ”My ultimate hope in all of this is for reconciliation, and I’d welcome the chance to dialogue with John Paul about that. Hopefully space apart is giving everyone a chance for clarity. It’s a story as old as time – bands going through hard times. Not seeing eye to eye. Having breakdowns. I’d like to think this hiatus will allow us to ultimately forgive, to realign in a healthier way musically and to reemerge stronger for it as a duo.”

First things first, what is the current status of The Civil Wars? Joy: The current status of the band is something I'm still trying to figure out myself, honestly. John Paul and I, at the moment, are not on speaking terms. You can't really determine the outcome of a band if you're not on speaking terms. I have hope that a deep breath might bring clarity for both of us. I hold out hope for reconciliation and coming back together and continuing on because I believe so much in the music we make together.

Will you tour on this album? Joy: I would love to play these songs live. There really is so much magic when John Paul and I put our heads together and create music onstage and in studios. That's something I've really appreciated over the years and loved doing. We're trying to sort that out right now. I wish I had concrete answers to give. I want to know the outcome of all of this more than most.

Their last performances were excruciating, she said. “There were times that I would look over at him, just inches away, and I felt like I was looking through a telescope to find him,” she said. The final night, she recalled fighting back tears. “It really had gotten to the point where we just weren’t speaking to each other, and I felt like I was simultaneously reaching for something.”
