10. JoyTofu

¡Buenas de nuevo! Después de muchos días sin escribir nada, hoy os vengo a hablar de uno de los últimos descubrimientos que he hecho.

En este caso se trata de una “carne” de procedencia china un tanto curiosa. La marca es JoyTofu, por el momento desconozco si tiene otros productos, aunque he estado haciendo un poco de búsqueda en internet y creo que cuentan con otros snacks de este tipo. Este en concreto creo que es el sabor normal, puesto que había un par más: uno era el picante y otro, creo recordar, de algas.

Lo cogí porque me pareció curioso el envase y la presentación en general, además de no contener ningún ingrediente de origen animal ni aceite de palma. Lo cierto es que no tenía ni idea de qué sabor tendría, ni cómo se comía, si había que prepararlo o venía ya cocinado, no tenía idea de nada, ya que en el envase tampoco especifica nada más que los ingredientes. Cuál fue mi sorpresa al abrirlo el paquete y ver que dentro había siete paquetitos más chicos. Qué gracioso, pensé.

Después de ver estos paquetitos, todo apuntaba a que esto era algo que se comía como un aperitivo, que ya estaba cocinado, así que procedí a abrir uno de ellos. Viene muy poquita cantidad en cada uno de los envases, todo hay que decirlo. En el paquete especifica que vienen 112 gramos en total (creo que son gramos, porque está todo en chino y lo único que entiendo son los números), así que si hay siete paquetes, representa que en cada uno debe haber 16 gramos. Una vez puse el contenido de uno de los paquetitos en un bol, procedí a olerlo y os tengo que decir que en cuanto a olor no me atrajo mucho. De buenas a primeras me recordaba un poco al olor de la comida húmeda de gato, pero no tan fuerte.  En cuanto a la textura, a simple vista se nota que son bastante aceitosos, pero tampoco es algo que me moleste.

Pasemos al sabor, que es una de las cosas más importantes. Está bue-ní-si-mo. Sabe como a fuet (si es que recuerdo a qué sabe el fuet) y a pollo tostado, la textura es más bien la de este último.  De verdad, está muy bueno, no me lo esperaba. Si le tengo que poner alguna pega, es la poca cantidad que viene, porque me apetece mucho hacerme un señor plato de arroz integral mezclado con este pollo-fuet vegetal.

Supongo que os interesará también saber que los ingredientes con los que está hecho son, básicamente, soja, agua y especias como, por ejemplo, hinojo, canela, anís, cáscara de naranja, regaliz o nuez moscada, entre otras. También contiene azúcar y levadura.

Este en concreto viene del supermegamercado chino que hay en la calle Balmes de Barcelona, donde podéis encontrar infinidad de cosas como fideos, seitán, soja, algas o tofu. Su precio fueron 2€ y, como os decía, hay otras dos variedades de la misma línea que, la verdad, es que me llaman mucho la atención. Ojalá hagan paquetes industriales... Siento no haber escrito en tanto tiempo, ¡pero tengo muchas cosas por contar! y espero que sea muy pronto.  ¡Un saludo y muchas gracias por haber llegado hasta aquí!

Joytofu Vegetarian Meat

And here it is, my first review! I got this bag of Joytofu brand Vegetarian Meat at the Asian Market. It was the most expensive veggie jerky there, at a whopping $3.69 for the bag. However, it's also a huge bag, with 7.5 ounces of vegetarian meat in there! So pound for pound it's probably the same as the other kinds, which are more like $.99-1.29 for 2 oz.

The vegetarian meat itself comes in little individual vacuum sealed packages in three flavors: yellow, orange, and red. There are 4 of each flavor. There is no English on the packages but you can see just by looking at them that they are different from each other. You can also see that they are very oily.

First of all, you should know that I have a super high tolerance for spicy food, so if I say something is kinda spicy, you may find it very very very spicy depending on your palate. Some of these are kinda spicy so you should know!

So let's start with yellow flavor:

You can see that there are visible red pepper flakes in here, but this is not as spicy as the red. It has a dry tofu texture, nicely chewy but it doesn't have stringy fibers like wheat gluten does (oh how I love stringy fibers!). The taste is just a little spicy, with a hot-doggish flavor and it seems like there is some Szechuan peppercorn in there (hard to describe if you haven't had it, it tastes a little bitter and makes your tongue tingle and it is great). All around it is salty and soy sauce and spicy tingly tasting.

On to orange:

This one is mild, and a little sweet, like sweet soy sauce. This would be a reasonable fake pork (like the pork in pork fried rice). Same dry tofu texture as the yellow, I think the base protein is the same for all of them. The other two are more exciting but this would be a good chilled-out choice for snacking on when you are feeling tame.

And finally, red:

I apologize for the photo, this one came out looking weird and glistening and gross no matter what I did. Unlike the other two which are STUNNINGLY BEAUTIFUL! This is my favorite, and also the spiciest. It has red sauce with lots of visible red pepper flakes and tastes like the red pepper oil you get at Chinese restaurants if you ask for it. Exactly like that. I'm pretty sure that's what's on it. Only it's taken the form of nice chewy snacky soy jerky and there's a little bit of sweetness in the jerky part. Awesome. I award it 5 tofus. 

All in all, this is a nice selection of different soy jerkies, and they will last pretty much literally forever (if you don't eat them right away!) because of the tiny packets. You can send them to school with your weird kid for snacks, so the other kids will make fun of their weird food! I think the actual intended purpose of these guys is to go on top of soup or rice, but who knows.

Ingredients (there is just one ingredients list for the whole bag): Soybean texture protein, water, vegetable oil, salt food (!), additives (MSG, disodium 5'-ribonucleotide, edible essence), sugar, spice, chili, chinese prickly ash

Supposedly there are 3 2.5 oz servings in this bag and each one only has 150 mg of sodium but that seems impossible.
