JP Neang’s “Soul Flower.”

Opening on Saturday, November 6th, 2021 at Spoke Art in San Francisco, California is artist JP Neang’s solo exhibition, “Soul Flower.”

Comprised of a collection of new delicately detailed illustrations, Soul Flower is a whimsical exhibition examining the corruption of good things.

Neang's illustrations investigate the understanding of human capacity through intimate micro drawings, playful storytelling and Folklore. The fragility of her medium on a micro- scale allows one's feelings to naturally pipe themselves into a single pulse, furthering our connection to the significance of "the individual" as they visit her works.

The narrative threaded throughout the exhibition is told through the lens of an itty-bitty fictional character who JP has named Lucky Sleven. In this world, Sleven is seen challenging adversity by pursuing an unusual desire - the desire to oppose its entitled right as the corruptor of good things. By challenging this narrative the viewer can see the characters world come to life in small details, provoking emotions of loneliness, exploration and perseverance.

The illustrations depict macro and micro stages of Sleven’s evolution and the capacity to carry on through desires of windfall; to be found, to feel safe, and to know love. JP hopes these illustrations become cathartic to others, and perhaps, guide the viewer to feel the profound beauty of our own calamity.

Victoria David: JOURNAL #6 & #7: Lenora Lee & JP Neang

LENORA LEE

Application: Lenora’s medium of art is in Dance and theatre. She creates a positive environment for her students to be open minded and collaborative with one another to make an amazing production. She listens and critiques accordingly, but is more of a director of inspiration. Although she deals more with the financial aspects of Dance and theatre, her experience and wisdom shows through.

Reflection: Her dances usually deals with issues that are not uncommon to the Asian American community. She uses the experiences of her dancers to “speak out” through movement which makes the dance intriguing. By expressing ideas of conflict and resolve through movement, her dancing is a form of healing for her dancers as well as the audience. As a former dancer, I do understand the importance of feeling through dance. To be able to convey a message through dance is such a complicated thing to do, but to be able to continue doing it shows perseverance which I admire. 

Theory: Her different themes is in her productions are definitely a form of activism. She takes the emotions felt through conflict and changes them into a movement. It’s an inspiration to watch, because the emotion that people keep inside, she helps them to release it into their movements. And people can relate to one another that way. By practicing the art of dance, she helps define praxis.

Application: JP is an artist of different mediums. She does a lot of traditional art, as well as make art out of everything she touches. From her workshop, I gathered that she works with what she has, and turns something that you would think is very ordinary into something beautiful. By doing that, I feel like the purpose of her art is to bring inspiration and heal those who view it.

Reflection: JP’s worked with many different production companies which helped give her the tools and experience she has to create her beautiful art. Although she came from a family who disapproved of her art, no one can deny that she is wonderful at what she does. She works to teach children art, especially those who are going through struggles, and provides them a way to express themselves creatively. Her art is healing, and she is an inspiration to those who want to help the community. JP’s life is no way similar to mine, but the fact that she wants to share her art with the world, and interact with children to allow them freedom to create really sticks with me. I want to, someday, mentor children and let them know that they don’t have to be afraid of boundaries when it comes to art. I love art, and it’s healing properties.

Theory: Her art is healing, and inspiring. When she shared her family experience and past that made her who she is today, she reminds the community that the only thing that can hold you back from achieving what you want to achieve is yourself. Her experience is inspiration to those who think that they can’t express themselves due to invisible boundaries, to express themselves...
