translation: hanyu yuzuru’s comments on withdrawing from 2020-21 GP series

hey guys, my first post on this blog! a quick translation of yuzuru’s statement from today on his difficult decision to withdraw from the upcoming GP series.

i’m still testing out formatting on this blog, so apologies if anything looks off.

Yuzuru: “The relationship between COVID19 and asthma is still not clear, and as there is not sufficient information either, it's a difficult position to make judgments from, but, because there are reports that those affected with respiratory illnesses are more susceptible to get seriously ill if they contract COVID19, I want to act with the utmost caution. Also, regardless of my asthma specifically, I think it's important to consider my actions carefully from the perspective/experiences of other athletes, who upon contracting COVID19, had their athletic activities put in a difficult situation due to after-effects of the virus.

“It is also expected that it would be difficult for my coach (Brian) Orser, currently living in Canada, to come over to Japan for the sake of accompanying me in competitions held in Japan. Alternatively, if I were to participate in Canadian competitions from (being based in) Japan, I would be required to undergo a two week period of self-isolation upon entering Canada. Since skating-related activities and practice aren't possible during that period, as an athlete, I could not hope to go to competition in ideal condition.

“In the midst of this COVID19 crisis, due to my movements*, there is also the possibility of many people travelling and gathering, which as a result would increase the risk of virus transmission. As the rate of virus infection has yet to slow down around the world, we should not become a vector for spreading further infection, and so [in this instance] if my restraint** can act as a means of preventing virus contraction, I think it may contribute as an overall action helping to curb the spread of the virus.

“Although it is with my sincere regrets, because of the aforementioned reasons, I have made the decision to withdraw from this season’s ISU Grand Prix series. I hope for the end of the COVID19 crisis as soon as possible.”

Q: What were you like as a primary school student? JUN: Since I was small, I loved to read books, and even now I still read a wide range of things from novels to manga!

HOSHI: I was a quiet kid, I don’t think there was anyone who wanted to be a singer more than me~! MINGHAO: I liked being active and studying, I was the class representative. My (exam) results were quite good! DINO: I was a kid who liked to be out in front! Q12: What anime character would you like to be?

S.Coups: Ace from ONE PIECE. I’m attracted to characters on the bad side. Jeonghan: Zoro from ONE PIECE. Joshua: Either Saitama from One Punch Man or the main character of Shokugeki no Soma, Kohei Inno. Jun: Is who I want to cosplay okay? Gin from Hotarubi no Mori e. Hoshi: Saitama from One Punch Man. It’d be cool to hit with just one punch! Wonwoo: I’ve never thought about this (lol). However, because he is a character fighting for something good, I choose Luffy from ONE PIECE. Woozi: Either Luffy, Detective Conan or Keroro, whoever from my favourite anime. The8: It’s different from wanting to be, but I had a dream once about Doraemon. Mingyu: Doraemon. I wish I could use his “Doko demo Doa” (door to anywhere) whenever I wanted. Dokyeom: Luffy from ONE PIECE. Seungkwan: Because I like volleyball, I’d want to be Nishinoya from Haikyuu-!! Vernon: One Punch Man. He’s super cool. I also like Bouzu. Dino: The protagonist of Digimon’s Adventures. I also want to evolve Agumon.

Thank you greatly for so much support at Pyeongchang. Being uplifted by everyone’s support, yet another one of my dreams came true. I hope my words and experiences can become some sort of motivation/inspiration for others.

This was a cute surprise that greeted me one very hot summer night in August (2019) when I went into this bookstore behind Tokyo Station, just to take a look, being exhausted from chasing down Rayquaza raids in Pokemon Go... I wasn’t expecting to run into surprise yuzu when i went downstairs just to find a bathroom! I feel like this definitely brought me some much needed good luck, since the raid at this bookstore *finally* netted me that coveted shiny Rayquaza (I had already done close to 30 raids with no luck until then dklfjd). Thank you yuzu! lol

Q6: Which member do you want to make your brother, and what kind of relationship (i.e. older or younger)?

S.Coups: Woozi. Even if we don’t talk much, we are siblings connected strongly in our hearts. Jeonghan: I want to make Dokyeom my brother! Joshua: I want Hoshi to be my older brother. Jun: I want Jeonghan to be my little brother, so we can play more and more (lol). Hoshi: Dino looks like my little brother (did Dino say “Hoshi is my little brother”?). Ahhh that guy, Dino~!! (lol) Wonwoo: Vernon. I feel like he is who I should look after the most. Woozi: If I had to choose only one, S.Coups. I have no siblings, and we have known each other for 8 years now, so he is like an older brother to me. The8: I want Vernon to be my friendly little brother. Mingyu: Seungkwan. Because he is the one I worry about the most. DK: Seungkwan is like my playful little brother. Seungkwan: I want Dino to become my older brother. Vernon: Everyone is my brother so I can’t choose! Dino: I want Hoshi to become my little brother.

HIP HOP TEAM about VOCAL TEAM

WONWOO - On stage, you can listen to their songs and your ears melt. But, usually they are a gang of mischievous people (lol).

VERNON - They really are the most mischievous people, you wouldn’t think so. But they really turn heads. Also, every team’s teamwork is pretty good, but don’t you think the vocal team’s teamwork is a little strange?

S.COUPS - Yeah. Among the three teams, the vocal team really seems like playmates, or something like a pair of lovers, they are really crazy about each other (lol). I feel like they have the best energy.

Q9: If you could switch with a member for a day, who would it be and what would you do?

S.Coups: Mingyu. I just want to be taller. Jeonghan: I don’t want to change. If I had to say...... no one (lol). Joshua: I want to see what it’s like to be Woozi. Jun: Woozi. I’m interested in how he makes songs. Hoshi: No one. We all spend so much time together, so I don’t think anything would change if we switched places (lol). Wonwoo: Joshua-hyung. Even though I’m good at Korean, I’ve always wondered what its like to think about things in Korean and English. Woozi: Mingyu. I want to taste the clean air up high just once (lol). The8: It used to be Vernon, but now I’d say Woozi. With the talent of composing music, I’d like to try to make something fun. Mingyu: I want to sing with Dokyeom’s big voice! Dokyeom: I want to see what it’s like to be Mingyu. Mingyu is tall, and lately has been training a lot, so I want to see what its like to move with that kind of body. Seungkwan: I want to dance like Hoshi-hyung. Vernon: I want to become Dokyeom-hyung, to make everyone die from laughter like he does (lol). Dino: The8-hyung. He has a good sense of style and taste, and I want to know the feeling of wearing clothes like that.
