A true skimmer. Much has been made on the supposed “skimming” nature of certain extinct flying reptiles (Pterosaurs). “Skimming”, flying low over water with the lower beak trawling the surface for prey, is a specialised niche known from skimmer birds, Rhynchops sp. living today. This lifestyle results in some pretty drastic specialisations that no one has been able to identify from Pterosaurs, despite certain researchers’ claims based on these animals’ extraordinary beaks, necks and crests. Despite these claims, no one has yet found conclusive skimming-related adaptations on a pterosaur. If such an animal lived, it would probably look something like this. This is a speculative animal, related to well-known pterosaurs such as Pteranodon and Nyctosaurus, but smaller. I decided to name it Anomalorhnychus, after its very exaggerated lower beak. It is resting on a sandbar, somewhere in improbable time.
