I first encountered the work of @johnpaulleon on the blog of @declanshalvey , and fell in love instantly. His light seemed dark, and his shadows seemed to shimmer. His style was grim, moody, raw, and yet restrained. That restraint lent his figures the potential energy of a monumental seated statue, that you expect to get up and move at any second. His figures appeared as titans, even the ones without superpowers. Ordinary people loomed large, shaped by their almost abstract environments. The viewer could feel powerful, not on spite of their humanity, but because of it. And that is an effect that only a great artist can inspire. RIP JPL.
