Of an era, somehow old
Pension Building, Now National Building Museum, Washington, DC, 1973.
Built to administer and distribute pensions to Civil War widows and veterans, the building has a magnificent covered courtyard. In the 1960s the building was decrepit and slated for demolition. A fine example of adaptive reuse, it now houses the National Building Museum. The building is surrounded on the outside with a terra-cotta frieze depicting battle scenes, the tan band above the ground floor. The second photo shows a small portion of that frieze just above the entry doorway. The National Building Museum is Federally chartered but run by a private foundation and is not part of the Smithsonian Institution. Adjacent to the Judiciary Square Metro station, it is well worth a visit if only to see the frieze and the interior court.
