Let anyone else in, the sentence would have finished, if it wasn’t for the person he caught sight of when he glanced round. He wasn’t expecting a familiar face right at the moment, let alone someone of quite that nature. It makes him grin anyway, quick and unexpected. “Or, well. Exceptions all over the place, I suppose.”
“No,” he lied -- but it was obvious in both tone of voice and downcast expression. “The sadder you are, the easier it is to fake it. Not like I’d know a thing about that.”

Nothing. Nothing, Jules says, though Marcus can’t for a moment believe him. Bruises from words don’t leave the same physical evidence as tangible attacks -- yet Marcus knows the pain of evil words, knows enough to understand this man is hurting. ( And God knows he’s hurting, too. )

Jules has spent all day painting the models’ faces for the photoshoot and now her fingers feel dry and gummy for it. Her thighs are smeared up and down with various foundation colors. As a freelancer, it’s not uncommon to run into the same people over and over, and she’s worked with Mr. Ryley on multiple occasions--which always makes it awkward when someone yells for Jules! and they both do a gazelle-lion-spotting impression.
But the model is taking a break, so Jules cozies up behind the older man, looking over his shoulder. Forever nosy and fascinated with the process. Picking at a dry half of a poppy seed bagel she stole from the craft table. “Sup. Retouching already?” She picks at another bite, some poppy seeds fall. “I dunno, her makeup job was pretty flawless, I think your work is done, J-2.”
