Being history geek here-
But theory popped up on my mind about how while senate and Preatorship works for Cj/new rome
Okay- so in the books Preators are kinda portrayed as highest role there(or cj at least) . And had me thinking cause during the Roman republic(which cj/new rome seems more based on?) Preators weren't the highest command,Consols were. Tho the term preator likely came first, the role was renamed to Consols, and the preator role was more defined to what it was more known as through most its run.
There was two main Preatorship roles, more were added and taken away later by certain Ceaser and emperors.
Praetor urbanus , which presided over urban affairs, typically electing judges and presiding over similar affairs, and would be given extensive authority during times both consols were away. This was the only preatorship at first.
Praetor peregrinus who presided over foreign affairs.
Others were added as rome conquered more land. Though during the empire their role was lessened.
But yeah- my theory here is that there is a adult consol/senate(at least i hope to the gods there is),and after the fall of Rome, and as Camp Jupiter and New Rome began to form Preators were set up to specifically lead camp. Being given the title as Preators as they of course didn't have same strong authority as the adult Consols.
Maybe at some point they'd be approved by consols after election but clearly that's not how it works in the books(at least Percy doesn't mention talking to any adults when given role of Preator). At some point the adults just decided "fuck it. Y'all on your own kids" and left them to elect on their own hdufp but still occasionally communicate with the Preators
But, being Preator in camp does well for your resume in new rome. Like being a valedictorian. More the reason Octavian wanted the role, especially coming from old family that wouldn't be surprised many held Preatorship during their time.
I also have theory that because there's likely a lot of legacies in new rome, most who never had to survive outside camp or new rome unless they been on quests, and many of the most powerful families been there for 100s of years, many of them don't really know the true dangers being a demigod outside camp. And why camp and new rome still war like, many don't really know what that really means outside of veterans if they fought in ww2 or decided to fight in any other mortal war. So lot of them aren't really prepared for war anymore as they left that behind after camp. Its why camp leads most of the battles, because the adults running new rome are too rusty and have that "just let the kids do it" mind set.
I do think(or imagine at least) that after both wars Consols and adult senate recieves lot of unrest from families who might've lost their kids, given Julia is said to have lost her parents during Caligula's first assault i assume the consol and senate at least decided to rise veterans to help defend the city during that time.
New Rome Consols being outshined in leadership by children is hilarious actually XD but also sad 😭
