How a Former Feral Child Inspired a Massive Photo Project | VICE | United States

On this episode of 'Daily VICE,' we meet Marina Chapman, whose story of living in the jungle as a child served as inspiration for Julia Fullerton-Batten's photo series.

Meet Marina Chapman, the woman who inspired fine art photographer Julia Fullerton-Batten’s project “Feral Children”.

The photo series focuses on the stories of 15 children who at some point were left or neglected by their parents, lost, or snatched by wild animals to be raised in unusual circumstances.

Fine art photographer Julia Fullerton-Batten recently spoke to Interview Magazine about her latest series The Act and the preparations involved in the year long project.

On creating the sets for the series: “This is the first time in my arts projects where I've totally created the set in the studio. I kept the outer space of the set because I wanted it to look like the girls were in a staged set, rather than pretending the set is real.”

Intended to explore the lives of women in the sex industry, Julia’s subjects include escorts, erotic dancers, and porn stars.

The series is made up of interviews accompanied by portraits aimed at creating a film interpretation of their lives. “They have chosen a way of life that many would consider extreme, or at the very least, brave.”

Contemporary art magazine Hi-Fructose recently revisited Julia Fullerton-Batten’s series “Teenage Stories”. 

In the series, Julia recreated thought provoking and surrealistic images of female adolescents. The towering girls signifying the outgrowth of their environment.
