Start The Week With Music
Three, they say, is a crowd - but not in classical music, and certainly not when the three are among the greatest soloists ever to have recorded fine music. Here - with what arguably is one of the finest works composed in the 19th century - are Julius Katchen, Janos Starker and Josef Suk.
Johannes Brahms wrote the first of his three piano trios at the age of 20, in January of 1854. As far as we know, it is his earliest surviving chamber work. Close friends, among them Clara Schumann, immediately thought very highly of it and continued to rate it among his most accomplished compositions. Brahms himself though came to dislike it, arguing the original score was too long and lacking in finesse. In 1890, he presented a considerably revised version.
That's the one almost always played today - though almost never in a manner as direct, loving, passionate and sensual as it is on this DECCA recording from 1968, a double CD which contains all three of the Brahms trios. It's one of those recordings I'd probably want to have on my desert island.
So here is the piano trio No 1 in B-Major, op 8, by Johannes Brahms.
1. Allegro con brio 2. Scherzo 3. Adagio 4. Allegro
