unnecessarily long august fic 2k22! this one is a fanmade backstory for him, from when he’s a kid, up to around the time he adopted april.

SCARLET MIRROR SPOILERS (this is fan theory and is not canon.)

the maps in their full length, are too big for azuma to hold. they’ll get creased if he tries, dropping them in his excitement. so hajime takes them, and spreads them neatly on the bedroom floor. they sit next to each other, azuma pointing out places, and hajime telling him different things he’d learned about that country.

they are far apart in age, but they’re close, and hajime looks out for his young brother. he makes a lot of plans and wishes with azuma, who grins at him with his baby smile. azuma is little, and gets excited by how big the world is. hajime will be going to collage soon, and he’s looking forward to the future that is real within his hands.

“what is this place, hajime-nii?” azuma asks, pointing with small hands.

“well, that’s——”

july wakes up sweating, raking his fingers through his hair. when did it get so long? july doesn’t know. there is a tiredness in him that has been there for a long time, his hair has a burdensome weight to it. he never remembers his dreams, but he always wakes up with anxiety pricking below the skin.

where is he? ah yes, this country. august told him about it on the phone, he moved in a few days ago. august is going to the other side of the world soon, and he’s excited to leave. july doesn’t really get excited by travelling—he doesn’t get excited by much at all. it’s a bother, he’s just here to do a mission and then leave. he doesn’t understand why august thirsts for knowledge like he does.

he has a strange feeling though, every time august talks about travelling so enthusiastically. july doesn’t care what it is, but he gets a feeling of deja-vous sometimes. when they assigned him on this mission, he thought he could recall promising to visit this country with someone else. he doesn’t know who, so it can’t be real. he doesn’t speak to anyone so small, with silver hair like that.
