When There Is Not Enough Oxygen One of the biggest reasons fish jump out of the aquarium in hopes of finding a new home is due to a lack of dissolved oxygen in the water. While most fish do not have lungs to breathe gaseous oxygen, they need a lot of dissolved oxygen in water to breathe. If the fish are unable to breathe well due to lack of oxygen, they can jump in hopes of finding a place with more dissolved oxygen. Oxygen deficiency can occur in our aquarium for various reasons. This means that our fish will literally compete and fight each other for the right to breathe.
