Life on the Clarence River
by kylie jackson
There are some places that I visit regularly where I don’t need to wear a watch. The call of Rosellas and Black cockatoos tell me when its time to get out of bed. The kayaks go into the water and my camera goes into a double dry bag. Its time to explore the mighty Clarence River.
This river is huge. As we navigate our way north past the banks a White-bellied Sea-Eagle - Haliaeetus leucogaster sweeps in from behind a flock of unaware Dusky Moorhens carrying off with it a young fowl. The scene is both mesmerizing and chaotic all at once. Each bend in the river brings new sights and sounds. Rainbow Bee-Eaters - Merops ornatus, Australian Reed-Warblers - Acrocephalus australis and Eastern Rosellas - Platycercus eximius fly from tree to tree feeding on the insects and grass seeds which the life giving river provides with abundance.
Eastern Grey Kangaroos - Macropus giganteus feed on the rich grasses and scatter when the yaks get too close. Dragonflies and damselflies land on giant lilys and river plants. The entire journey every single time is a pleasure and joy.
