Photo @materas // Exploring an ice cave beneath the Mendenhall Glacier, Juneau Icefield, Alaska. As the Mendenhall Glacier is retreating, ice caves are created as the meltwater melts out underneath the ice. The Mendenhall has retreated 1.75 miles since 1929 and continues to retreat. The blue ice is hundreds of years old at the terminus of the galcier and absorbs all wavelengths of light except blue, giving the glacier its incredible blue colors.
