you had just finished your mini tour for your first album in the u.s. you and your group had debuted not too long ago, and you seemed to be pretty popular among people almost immediately. unfortunatelty for you, that meant you were going to be separated from your best friend, junghoon. he was also an idol and had debuted only a month before you. you two had been friends from even before your trainee days, and when you began to train under the same company as rappers, you only grew closer. the fact that you debuted within a month of each other was just lucky.
lately, the two of you had been busy with everything. he was working for his group's second album and you were touring so seeing each other was something that you had been struggling with. luckily for the two of you, you both had free time in the upcoming days. for the longest time, you and junghoon had been talking about having a sleepover. you figured that was your best bet since only a few hours together wouldn't be enough. granted, one night wasn't really enough either, but it was better than nothing.
the sleepover was going to be at your place, and you were more than excited. you were just finshing up cleaning your flat as there was a knock at the door. to say you ran to the door was an understatement. upon opening it, you were met with your best friend. he looked different, more muscular with dyed grey hair and maybe even a little taller. he pulled you into his embrace, your arms wrapping around him almost right away. the two of you stayed like that in the doorway for about a minute, but it seemed like forever. you had missed him more than you could ever express, and he felt the same way.
when you pulled away from the hug and oved to let him in, you finally spoke, "long time no see, huh?"
with a small chuckle, he nodded, "yeah, way too long of a time. i barely recognized you! you have blue hair! what happened to my best friend who didn't even want to dye their [natural hair color] hair to a lighter shade of the same color?"
"hey, it wasn't that i didn't want to dye it, it was that i didn't trust you to do it without messing up!" you argued and he rolled his eyes playfully.
you caught up for a little bit before going to the kitchen to grab the watermelon you had cut up. the two of you sat at the island in the kitchen and continued talking. junghoon explained to you how he was impressed that you manage to live with the ten other members of your group when sometimes being around just four people can get him annoyed. however, you told him that while you loved your group, having ten people did get annoying, between lack of space and chores, it seemed like you had to do so much work despite being the maknae like your best friend. it felt like almost everyone was taking on the responsibility as the leader at one point or another.
"i missed having you to talk to," you added, "you've always understood me better than anyone, and i think that's only becoming more true through time. like seriously, what were the chances that we would both get into the same company, train for the same amount of time to be rappers, then debut in groups in the same year while also being the maknae? we're living parallel lives." you poked his cheek as you finished speaking.
"i mean, i guess you're right. it's kind of strange, but i guess i'd be lying if i said i didn't like having you around. you're the only person i really have besides my groupmates that i can talk to, and sometimes i don't like telling my groupmates things. like i know they're there for me to help me improve and stuff but i hate seeming like, helpless, or whatever."
"well, i think maybe you should talk to them anyways. don't get me wrong, i'm always here if you need me, but those dudes love you more than anything. they look at you like a little brother, especially rubin. he would go to the ends of the earth for you. or if that's too much, talk to jehyun. he's only a little bit older than us and i think he would one hundred percent understand where you're coming from with everything. i truly think that any idol out there would understand everything you're feeling." you chose your words carefully, not wanting to overwhelm junghoon. you could see it in his face that he was processing your words.
"i guess you're right," he spoke after a minute and once he felt the atmosphere getting awkward, he changed the subject, "hey, i bet i could still kick your ass in mario kart."
"in your dreams, lee."
turns out, he was right. after endless races on mario kart, you had only managed to beat him once. you didn't mind this at all, however, because you two had been smiling and laughing the entire time. it was just like old times and that was all you could have asked for.
for the next hour, the two of you played different games until sitting down to watch a movie. he had chosen a horror movie, mainly because he knew you hated them. it only took about twenty minutes and two jumpscares to freak you out. junghoon was laughing beside you, repeating over and over that it was just a movie and that of this was going to happen to you because it's fake. despite his claims that you'd be fine, you still refused to watch the rest of the movie.
you two decided to get ready for bed about twenty minutes after turning the movie off. you had finished getting ready for bed first, so you were laying on your bed waiting for junghoon. he showed up not long after you laid down and climbed onto your bed beside you, pulling the blankets up to his chin like you had them. you two didn't say much, you just stared at each other. you were more than happy to be in each other's company. it seemed as though you both realized that seeing each other was going to be near to impossible as your careers continued.
"are you sure you can only stay tonight and not tomorrow too?" you asked, trying not to be too obvious that you didn't want to say goodbye to your best friend again just yet.
"unfortunately.. i wish i could say i could stay, y/n, but rubin needs me back at the dorm tomorrow so that we can discuss lyrics or something." he explained, "i think we need to start going over choreo too."
"i get that, and that's okay." you paused, "man, things are really different. i remember when we couldn't be apart for more than a day.. now we're apart for months at a time."
"i didn't know living my dream was going to take me away from my favorite person. it's bittersweet. i get taken from someone i love to do something i love." he mumbled sleepily.
"it'll be worth it.. it's already worth it. we've wanted to do this our entire lives, and now we are.. we can be successful together like we always planned." you finished talking, which is when you realized that junghoon had already fallen asleep. with a chuckle, you turned off the light.
"i love you too."
