People often ask how can all these obvious signs go unnoticed. As a childhood abuse survivor myself, I totally believe in the possibility without a shadow of a doubt. I myself suddenly fell from a straight A sudden from 12-14 to failing, showed up with deep bleeding cane marks all over my body multiple times (can’t be covered by uniform, too many), bandaged visible hand after a teacher called about a failed weekly spelling test. I started having CPTSD, couldn’t sleep and fainted in school, dragged myself around with a depressed face without light in my eyes. Medical doctors didn’t comment on my fatigue and suggest depression, I went in because my immune system was poor and kept falling sick. I cried daily to sleep, my own mom never questioned why my eyes were so swollen all the time and why I had 950 degrees in both eyes at 12. She was in epic self denial. She was only happy my dad beat me so he stopped arguing with her. She had a plan and that was to sacrifice her own daughter to be his punching bag so cheating husband stayed with her. She accused me of watching too much TV or reading without light for my eyesight. She felt I was such a burden to a “saint” hoarder like her. She kept the TV wire to punish me. I didn’t even like watching TV. She then kept the phone so I couldn’t call my friends. I hid under beds, under tables when they fought, I ran when beaten but no door can stop an abuser determined to hunt you down. ONE teacher did a surface enquiry about my failing grades. NO ONE did anything. People mock, stare or pity when they see the marks kids and adults do not take action to save kids. It’s easy to grief and mourn the dead, most have no guts to defend and stand up for the living. This is the result of “your family your business”, this is about dead kids, not adult hurt feelings. Until today, it bothers me for people to give false assurance to survivors, no matter how well intentional. A system cannot be changed so fast, giving survivors false hope of someone jumping in to save them is actually why they don’t trust people.
