Pairing: Jungshin x You (Female!Reader)

Part 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, Epilogue | Words: 2,350
Jungshin let out a deep breath as discreetly as he could, momentarily glancing down at his shiny, black shoes. He wasn't the groom at this wedding, so he tried not to look too nervous or giddy.
But also, you would be walking down the aisle any second now, and even though he was only a groomsman and you were only a bridesmaid, his heart was still racing just thinking about it.
The fact that you were on the arm of another guy definitely helped tamp down his emotions, though, which was a good thing. All eyes were supposed to be focused on Yonghwa and, eventually, Emily. If Jungshin's smile upon seeing you was too beaming, it would definitely be a distraction.
The thought of switching up the order of the bridesmaid and groomsman pairs had crossed his mind for a split second earlier this morning (Jungshin was the tallest groomsman, and you were the second shortest bridesmaid, so naturally, you hadn't been put together -- though he was sure it hadn't been just about height at the time), but he had cast the idea aside quickly. You didn't like being the center of attention, and asking the bridal party to change things up at literally the last minute simply because Jungshin wanted to be the one you held onto as you walked down the aisle would absolutely have brought you unwanted attention.
And Jungshin was a changed man now! After months of self-reflection (and therapy), he was learning to be a considerate, observant, and thoughtful partner. The two of you had just gotten back together last night -- there was no way he was going to do anything to put your relationship in jeopardy. Now or ever!
So, he was sucking it up and pretending Yonghwa's cousin was just some generic mannequin robot guy. A vessel to transport you from one place to the other.
As soon as the pair ahead of you got to the end of the aisle and you stepped up (next to the generic mannequin robot guy), your gaze immediately met his, and every single worry Jungshin had melted away.
A shy but also delighted smile tugged at your lips, and he could see you clutch your small bouquet of flowers just a bit closer to your chest.
Jungshin couldn't help himself -- he winked at you.
His heart soared in his chest when your cheeks pinkened underneath your makeup. As much as he adored Yonghwa and Emily and wanted to make sure their Big Day was perfect, the only thing Jungshin could think about at the moment was running over to you, sweeping you off your feet -- literally -- and running away with you.
Waking up next to you this morning had been a dream come true. And, yes, that sounds dramatic, but it honestly had been. Jungshin had lost count of how many dreams he'd had about you after the breakup, so he'd had to discreetly pinch himself when he'd felt you pressed up against his back, cuddling his warmth.
And now, watching you walk down the aisle at a wedding... If someone told him this was all a dream, he would believe them.
His eyes never left yours as you made your way down, and when you were forced to look away as you took your place at the end of the line, Jungshin finally got the chance to admire your gorgeous dress and how your hair had been swept up just so.
He held his breath as he watched you get situated, and when your gaze met his once more, a sense of relief washed over him.
For some reason, every second you weren't with him or looking at him, he was afraid he was going to lose you.
Just kidding -- he knew exactly the reason why he was afraid. Because he'd done it once already (lost you, that is), and the only thing stopping him from doing it again was himself. You were perfect -- he was the one who had to get his act together and make sure it stayed together.
When he was sure that all (or at least most) eyes in the room were on the last bridesmaid/groomsman pair, he mouthed the words 'so beautiful' to you.
You beamed at him in response before mouthing back 'thank you' and then 'you too.'
Jungshin had just enough time to teasingly wave off your compliment before he had to turn and watch Emily coming down the aisle. But almost immediately he found his gaze drifting over toward you. It was definitely going to be difficult to pay attention for the next several hours when all he wanted to do was be with you.
As soon as you let go of Yonghwa's cousin's arm after walking back up the aisle, you made a beeline for Jungshin, making his heart flutter around in his chest.
Even though you had also whined about leaving him earlier this morning, it was still nice to know you were seemingly just as desperate to be near him as he was to be near you.
"I have so much to tell you!" you hissed as soon as you got within earshot, your eyebrows raised.
Jungshin reached out, sliding his hand around your elbow so he could pull you close. "What happened?" he murmured.
"Well, first of all," you began as you reached up with your free hand to straighten the knot of his tie. "You look completely gorgeous in that suit."
Because Jungshin was now New Jungshin, he gently took your bouquet so you didn't have to keep holding it -- for the time being. Once the bridal party began taking pictures in just a few minutes, he would surely have to give the flowers back.
"No, you look completely gorgeous in that dress," he grinned before leaning over to carefully peck your lips. "And your hair, your makeup -- everything. I can't believe you're real."
"Oh, yes, you can," you chuckled. "You've seen me during a stomach bug. It can't get much more real than that. But anyway!"
"Right, right, what happened?"
"I told Emily about us first thing this morning," you explained. Jungshin nodded, hoping you understood that it meant he also told Yonghwa first thing this morning.
"Okay, good," you said in reply to his nod. "So, we're both prepared for them to be super arrogant about it and constantly bring up the fact that their plan was brilliant."
Of course you'd understood what his nod meant. Of course you did! As he'd mentioned not that long ago, you were perfect!
"Yes, very prepared for that," Jungshin grinned.
"Great, perfect. Also --" You looked toward the bridal party and the photographer who had just appeared and whispered the next part quickly, obviously not wanting to wait until after the picture session to tell him. "Yonghwa's cousin -- y'know, my escort --"
"Mannequin robot guy."
"Right. Wait, what?"
"I'll tell you later."
"Yonghwa's cousin and Emily's best friend from high school totally hooked up after the rehearsal dinner last night," you declared, that certain smile Jungshin only saw when you were dishing out some amazing gossip now curving your lips.
"No!" he gasped, and you swiftly brought up your hand to cover his mouth, shushing him through your hushed laughter.
"Yep!" you whispered after leaning in even closer to him. "I think she regrets it because she hasn't looked at him once. I so cannot wait to see what happens at the reception."
Jungshin couldn't help but grin like a total goof. He hadn't realized it until now, but this was one of the things he'd missed the most about your relationship -- hearing all of your work, friend, or family gossip.
You had never been one to talk a lot, and you also hated being involved in drama; however, one thing you talked about with great pleasure and at any opportunity was drama you weren't involved in. And Jungshin had missed it. He'd missed your gossiping smile, the little twinkle in your eye right before you dropped the juiciest part, your overflowing excitement. He'd missed so many things about you, but being the recipient of your gossip was up near the very top of the list. Honestly, it made his heart ache to think about who you'd been gossiping to for the last few months since it definitely hadn't been him.
"Fill me in after the set," he muttered into your ear before placing a kiss on your temple.
You nodded wordlessly, briefly leaning into him before he handed your bouquet back and let go of your elbow so you could join the other bridesmaids for pictures.
But before you could leave his side, he whispered, "I love you."
Honestly, since the photographer had started calling out directions and the bridal party was now hurrying around in a flurry of movement, Jungshin hadn't been certain you would even hear him.
But you froze for a split second and then turned your head to look at him. There was still a hint of your gossip smile on your lips, but it was suddenly overtaken by a radiant grin that took Jungshin's breath away.
In the blink of an eye, you rose up on your toes and slid your arms around his neck.
Despite still trying to catch his breath because of your smile and despite the feeling of the entire bridal party watching as they waited for the two of you to join them for pictures, Jungshin's instincts took over, and he hugged you back. He delicately grasped the elegant fabric at the small of your back with one hand while he sunk his fingers into the soft skin in-between your shoulders with the other.
"I love you, too," you breathed, your lips brushing against his ear.
And then, just as quickly as you'd started it, you let go and stepped away from him, taking Jungshin's heart with you.
Okay, another thing Jungshin hadn't realized he'd missed about your relationship was being able to see you from the stage during a performance. As soon as he strummed the very first note of the very first song on his bass guitar, he'd been reminded of the way your eyes, filled with pride, were superglued to him and how, when you weren't singing along to the lyrics of the song, your lips were permanently curved in a grin.
If he couldn't be where he truly wanted to be -- sitting right next to you at the bridal party table -- then this was a pretty good alternative.
It actually gave him flashbacks to the night Yonghwa had introduced the two of you. Shortly after the set had started, he'd located Yonghwa and his (at the time) new girlfriend, Emily. But he'd barely been able to keep his attention on them because of the girl standing next to Emily, the one who was quite obviously staring at him but who also somehow seemed incredibly shy at the same time. It had only taken less than a second for Jungshin to realize he'd needed to know you -- your name, your favorite color, your hopes and dreams. Everything. Especially your relationship status.
Watching you now, sitting alone at the table with your wide, sparkling eyes trained on him while the rest of the bridal party was on the dance floor, made him feel that longing all over again. He knew virtually everything there was to know about you, but he still felt it -- the complete and total need to know you.
As much as he loved playing music and being in a band, he couldn't wait for this set to be over.
Thankfully, Yonghwa had only wanted them to play a handful of songs before letting a DJ take over, so within half an hour, Jungshin had packed up his bass and was sliding into the seat next to you.
"You were --"
But Jungshin cut you off, unable to wait a millisecond longer to press his lips to yours.
This was what it was supposed to feel like, wasn't it? Kissing you, feeling the gentle touch of your fingers on his jaw, smelling your perfume on your wrists and neck, feeling your lips curving into a smile the longer the kiss went on -- it all felt like... home.
"You were amazing," you chuckled as soon as you got a chance to finish your earlier thought.
Jungshin searched your face, his heart clenching. "I hope you missed watching the band as much as I missed seeing you in the audience, because I don't think I can play again without you."
Your chuckle developed into a full-on laugh, and your infectious grin made Jungshin smile, too.
"I didn't get a chance to tell you last night," you started, leaning in closely as the DJ started an upbeat (and loud) song. "Yesterday when I saw you doing the soundcheck in here was when I knew I still had feelings for you."
Jungshin's brows shot up.
"Oh?" he intoned, his smile morphing into a smirk. "So... that's a yes, then?"
You nodded, and Jungshin shifted to press his forehead against yours.
It wasn't until then that it truly registered just how loud the music was. When he was up on stage, it was easy for him to get used to the volume since he was the one actually producing the sound. But being on the other end was different, and he knew you weren't a huge fan of crowds or noisy environments (which is why he wouldn't take you coming to all of his shows for granted).
"You okay?" he asked, reaching up to trace along your jaw with his thumb. "You wanna get out of here?"
Again, you nodded. "Just for a little while," you agreed. "We can come back for the cake."
Jungshin took your hand then, standing up and letting you lead him wherever you wanted to go -- outside, back to your room, up to the supply closet in the penthouse restaurant. It didn't matter. He would follow you anywhere.
"Oh!" you gasped as soon as the music started to fade into the background as the two of you headed out the door. "I have to tell you about the cousin and the high school best friend!"
"Tell me every single thing you know," Jungshin replied as he squeezed your hand. "Don't leave out any detail."

Part 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, Epilogue | Words: 3,644
Mere seconds after hearing the door lock, you hoisted your armload of napkins into the washer and dashed over there. You grabbed the door handle with both hands, shaking and jiggling it to make sure you'd heard what you thought you'd heard.
And, yes. You had. The door was locked.
Since neither you nor Jungshin had yet found the light switch, you felt around the handle to see if there was a thumb turn or a keyhole or anything.
Of course, there wasn't.
So, you slid your hands along the door itself, trying to feel for something you could use to unlock the door from the inside.
Nothing.
You decided it was now time to resort to desperate measures: you balled your hand up into a fist and banged on the door.
"Hello?" you called out, pressing as close to the door as you could in an attempt to get anyone outside to hear you better. "Hello?!"
Suddenly, the closet filled with a somewhat dim light, and you lifted your gaze to see Jungshin standing right behind you, lowering his hand from the short chain attached to a lightbulb on the ceiling.
Well, at least you weren't in almost total darkness anymore.
Jungshin then reached over you and began knocking on the door. "Is anyone out there?" he asked, his voice raised.
"Hello?" you repeated, continuing your own knocking. But when it became clear no one could hear you, you paused and tilted your head up to make eye contact with Jungshin. "Do you have your phone? Mine's in my bag at my table."
Jungshin raised his eyebrows and immediately reached into his back pocket. "Yeah, right here."
You turned around, leaning your back against the door as you watched him clicking around the screen, presumably calling Yonghwa. And in the few seconds of silence, you couldn't help but lift your hand to your mouth to anxiously chew at your cuticles.
"It doesn't make sense," you whispered to yourself. Why would someone have locked the door? It almost felt --
"Hey, can you come unlock that supply closet?" Jungshin's voice rang out suddenly, and you almost jumped.
Your gaze nervously flew to his face, and your heart skipped a beat when you saw his forehead wrinkle.
"Wait, what? No, Yonghwa, wait --"
Jungshin let out a sigh as the hand holding his phone fell away from his face. He looked entirely defeated, and you were almost too scared to ask. But you knew you had to.
"What?" you breathed.
Jungshin just barely glanced at you, and... wait, were his cheeks turning pink, or was the lighting in here just weird?
"I... I think..." he began. "I think we're being set up."
Your head jerked back in surprise. "Set up?" you asked. "What do you mean?"
"Yonghwa said they wouldn't unlock the door until we've had time to talk."
You wanted to laugh, but all the air in your lungs had suddenly vanished.
What was he talking about? Who was 'they'? Until you had time to talk? About what?
"So, I'm guessing Emily asked you to help clean up and take those," Jungshin nodded toward the open washer with your napkins inside, "in here?"
You simply nodded.
Jungshin nodded, too. "Yonghwa got me to do the same thing with the tablecloths."
With a small shake of your head, you were finally able to take a breath and say something. "So, you're saying that Emily and Yonghwa... locked us in here together on purpose?"
"Yep."
Sure, that's what you'd been about to think not even a minute ago. It almost felt intentional. But to hear it said out loud? And have Jungshin confirm it? This was crazy!
"...But why? Talk about what?"
Deep down, you knew exactly what you needed to talk about. You just wouldn't admit it unless Jungshin did first.
Instead of answering you, though, Jungshin let out a deep sigh and turned on his heel, walking toward the other end of the closet.
You watched as he ran his hands over his face before turning around once he got to the wall opposite you.
"Talk about what?" you repeated shakily. He was only making you more and more nervous!
His gaze met yours then, and you held your breath.
"Talk about us," he answered.
Your first instinct was to play dumb, so that's what you did. "What about us?"
A wry but also embarrassed smile tugged at Jungshin's lips, and he chuckled dryly. "Okay, maybe just me then."
"What are you talking about?" you asked. Guilt crept into you as you heard the impatience in your voice, but you really needed him to be straightforward right now! Something was holding you back from telling him the truth (that 'something' being 'fear and anxiety'), and if he just told you how he felt, you were confident you could be honest with him, too.
"I still have feelings for you, okay?!" Jungshin snapped. It was obvious he had also heard the impatience in your voice and was only feeding off your anxious energy.
A tense cloud filled the space between the two of you. You could hear Jungshin breathing heavily, and your heart hammered inside your chest.
Words kept forming on your tongue, but every time you opened your mouth to say something, you lost your nerve.
So, finally, after probably two or three minutes, you said, "Can you turn around?"
Jungshin, god bless him, granted your request with no further questions. He turned around to face the wall, and you found yourself following suit, turning to face the door.
You took a deep breath, resting your forehead against the cool wood of the door. "I think I have feelings for you, too, I just don't know if getting back together is a good idea."
You squeezed your eyes shut, anticipating the sound of Jungshin turning back around and walking toward you.
But he didn't. His voice was a bit muffled when he asked, "Why not?" so it was obvious he was still facing away from you.
"I don't know," you told him truthfully. "I think I'm just scared of breaking up again. I don't want to go through that a second time."
You hadn't ever said this out loud, not even to Emily (though she knew, anyway), but the past few months had been rough. You'd known your decision had been fully justified and was a totally valid reason to break up with someone. You'd known it was the right decision in the long run for your mental health. But your heart had still been absolutely shattered.
I mean, you'd changed your flight so you wouldn't have to be on the same airplane as him, for goodness sake! Yes, you'd wanted to avoid as much awkwardness as you could, but you also just hadn't been ready to be in the same space!
"Do you remember," Jungshin began, "when I said that I would regret losing you for the rest of my life?"
Your throat tightened with emotion. "Yes," you croaked.
"Does that sound like I would ever let us break up again?"
...Well. He had you there!
You heard him moving, so you turned your head to the side to glance at him. He had, indeed, turned around to face you, the most earnest and adorable expression on his face.
"I meant everything I said at dinner last night," he assured you. "All of the things you said when you left, I took them to heart. I'm learning from my mistakes. And when I said I was working on becoming a better partner... I meant for you."
You had also turned to face him as he'd been speaking, your forehead wrinkling deeper and deeper the more he said.
Jungshin took a couple of steps forward before continuing. "I didn't come here to try and get back together with you," he clarified. "But I figured I would just let the chips fall where they may and see what happened."
"And the chips fell on the airplane," you muttered.
"Yeah," Jungshin chuckled. "I saw you, by the way. But I could tell you were trying to hide from me, so I pretended I didn't."
You rolled your eyes as you breathed out a laugh and shook your head gently at yourself. "But then I physically ran into you, and you couldn't ignore me any longer."
"No," he corrected, eyebrows raised. "I wasn't ignoring you. I was trying to be considerate of your feelings."
Your gaze fell, landing on your feet because you weren't sure you could look him in the eye when you said, "You're right. I was the one ignoring you."
You heard shuffling footsteps, and you saw the tips of Jungshin's shoes come into view.
"And you had every right to ignore me," he acknowledged, his voice soft. "In fact, you could ignore me forever if that's what you really wanted."
A fleet of manic butterflies had taken up residence in your stomach, and you still couldn't quite bring yourself to look at him.
"Is it?" he asked. "Is that what you want? Because if it is, just tell me, and I'll --"
This got you to raise your head, your gaze snapping to meet his. Wordlessly, you shook your head.
Before now, you hadn't been sure what you really wanted. Had you known you'd definitely fallen for him again? Yes. Had you admitted that maybe you hadn't actually ever stopped loving him? Pretty much, yes. But the idea of getting back together had, as you'd told him just a few minutes ago, been too scary.
As soon as Jungshin had suggested you could ignore him forever, you realized that would be impossible. Even if you wanted to -- which you didn't -- you couldn't ignore him. You couldn't ignore the connection the two of you had and would always have.
You felt all of your emotions bubbling up, your eyes welling with tears. Happy tears, frustrated tears, sad tears.
"Come here," Jungshin whispered, reaching out and pulling you to him. He lifted one hand to cradle the back of your head while the other slid around your back, holding you firmly.
And just like that, your thoughts from earlier today of curling up against his chest and burying your face in his neck and feeling his arms around you and being overwhelmed by his scent became reality.
Honestly, 'overwhelmed' was the best word to use because that's exactly what you were at the moment. It was overwhelming to be in Jungshin's arms again -- so much so that the tears which had welled up in your eyes were now spilling over.
You sniffled, and Jungshin began patting your back. He nestled his cheek against your hair, murmuring into your ear that it was okay.
"Cry if you need to, baby," he said in a soothing voice. "It's all right, you're safe here."
His words made you lift your head just enough to look at him, your eyebrows knit together in confusion.
"Who are you?" you asked with a watery chuckle.
Jungshin smiled as he tucked some hair behind your ear. "I'm me but better."
That was certainly the truth. The Jungshin of old wouldn't have said those words out loud. He had comforted you when you'd needed it, of course, but never like this.
...And you weren't going to lie. Hearing him call you 'baby' again made you feel as if flowers and rainbows were bursting out of your heart.
So, you pressed your face back into his neck, sliding your arms around his waist and clutching his shirt tightly in your fists.
Who knows how many minutes later, once you'd emptied your emotional reserve, Jungshin leaned back and searched your face.
(You really didn't want to know what you looked like at the moment, even though you knew Jungshin had seen you in much worse situations.)
"You good?" he murmured as he cupped your cheek gently, swiping his thumb under your eye and across your cheekbone.
"Yeah," you whispered with a tiny nod.
Jungshin leaned in and pressed a soft but quick kiss on your forehead before reaching into his pocket to retrieve his phone. As he called Yonghwa, you took the opportunity to cuddle against him once more. You felt him wrap his free arm around you, his hand coming up and gripping your shoulder.
How did this still feel so familiar? You hadn't hugged or cuddled him in what felt like so long, and yet, now that you were, it felt as if no time at all had passed.
"Hey, come unlock the door," Jungshin muttered. You felt the vibration of his voice in his chest against your cheek, and it sent a shiver down your spine.
"Yup," he continued. And then, with a single hum, he hung up. "He's coming. And you don't have to tell him anything. Actually, you just go get your bag and go back to your room. I'll handle Yonghwa."
You simply nodded, though you could feel your cheeks already starting to warm at the thought of seeing Yonghwa -- or Emily -- or anyone -- after what had just happened. Normally, you wouldn't appreciate someone telling you what to do like Jungshin just had, but in this case, going to get your bag and then going back to your room was exactly what you needed.
Not even a minute later, you heard the telltale sounds of keys unlocking the door. Instinctively, you stepped away from Jungshin, not wanting Yonghwa (or Emily, or anyone!) to make any assumptions about what had happened in this closet. You had nothing to be ashamed of, of course, but still. You didn't like being the center of attention in any situation!
As soon as the door opened, Jungshin gently put a hand on the small of your back and made sure you were able to leave first. You quickened your pace, feeling his hand fall away from you before you heard him say, "Dude. That was not cool."
You couldn't help but chuckle softly to yourself as you made your way over to the table where you'd been seated for dinner, snatching up your bag and then making a beeline to the elevator.
A hot shower and a plush bathrobe sounded so good right now.
A very long, deep sigh escaped your lips as you flopped back onto your bed about half an hour later. You were clean, refreshed, and cozy after showering and changing into your pajamas -- now it was time to get even cozier under the luxuriously soft covers of your hotel bed while you watched a fluffy rom-com on TV.
Just as you reached for the remote, your phone lit up with a text.
From Jungshin.
Are you still awake?
You quickly replied that you were, and then you anticipated his phone call. This had been a regular occurrence during your relationship: he would text you to make sure you weren't sleeping, and then he would call you for a nightly debrief to talk about your days.
But instead of a phone call, you just got another text.
Can I come to your room?
Oh. He wanted to talk in person.
It totally made sense because the two of you had admitted to having feelings for each other, but you hadn't actually decided verbally to get back together. Since tomorrow was the wedding, it did kind of feel like 'Now or Never.'
So, you sent back a message saying he absolutely could and included your room number.
As soon as he sent you a thumbs-up, your immediate instinct was to get out of bed, put on actual clothes, and take your hair out of the messy bun you'd thrown it into before your shower.
But you stopped yourself because this was Jungshin we're talking about. He'd seen you with and without makeup, hair done and not done, dressed up and dressed down, healthy and sick. If he cared what you looked like, then he definitely would've broken up with you a long time ago!
So, you simply stayed snuggled under the covers until you heard a knock on your door.
You shuffled over, letting out a deep exhale before opening it.
Jungshin barely gave you any time to process his arrival before he stepped inside and slid his arms around your waist, pulling you tightly to him.
"Oh," you chuckled, your arms instinctively winding around his neck. "Hi."
"Hi," he murmured, squeezing you gently and lifting you just slightly off the ground.
You figured he would put you back down and let go of you after a couple of seconds, but he continued hugging you for what seemed like a minute or two.
"All good?" you finally asked softly.
Jungshin let out a groan as he set you on the floor and unwound his arms, stepping back enough so he could look at you.
"All good," he answered. "I just missed you."
His words made your heart flutter and your cheeks warm; you were too shy to say anything back at the moment, so you simply ushered him over to your bed so you could sit and talk.
Unsurprisingly, Jungshin sat right next to you, though the two of you angled yourselves so you could sit more face-to-face. But Jungshin had always been a pretty affectionate boyfriend, so he made sure his knees were touching yours, and he almost immediately put a hand on your leg.
"So," he began. "I realized that we kind of left things up in the air. I mean, not really, but --"
"Yeah," you agreed.
Jungshin raised his eyebrows a bit and said slowly, "So... are we... back together?"
You bit the inside of your cheek, taking Jungshin's hand off your leg and holding it in both of yours. Your heart flipped at the feel of his fingers grasping yours.
"On the condition that we leave the past in the past, and you never, ever apologize again for why it ended," you told him, your gaze fixed on your hands.
Jungshin squeezed your hand before answering with, "Deal."
"And I promise I won't bring up the way it used to be and use it against you, even if I get really, really upset," you added.
A frown pulled at your lips when Jungshin gently extracted his hand from yours, but then he curled it up into a fist, sticking his pinky out toward you.
Your frown quickly turned upside-down as you did the same with your own hand, hooking your outstretched pinky around his and bringing your thumbs up together to stamp the promise.
As soon as you let go, Jungshin ever so delicately tackled you back onto the bed. You had barely shrieked in surprise before he settled in, cuddling up next to you while still half-pinning you down.
"Okay," you chuckled, pulling one arm out from underneath him so you could comb through his hair with your fingers. "I guess you're staying here tonight?"
Jungshin simply hummed and then pressed his face into your neck. His breath against your skin raised goosebumps all over you, and then when he inhaled quickly, preparing to say something, it made you shiver.
"Is it weird to say that I missed the smell of your soap?" he murmured. "And is it also weird to say that I'm glad you didn't change the soap you use?"
"No," you laughed. "In this situation, I don't think it's weird. It would be if I'd never met you before in my life."
Jungshin's breathy chuckle made you shiver again, but then he promptly lifted his head up to look at you.
"Wait, I got ahead of myself," he stated, his brow furrowed.
"What do you mean?"
"We made our pinky promise, and we stamped, but we didn't seal it with a kiss."
A smile burst onto your lips, but you tried to hide it with an astonished gasp. "Oh, my, you're right. That's critical."
You watched as he hoisted himself up onto his elbow, lifting his other arm up so he could cradle your cheek.
And when his lips met yours?
If you'd had any doubts up until now (which you hadn't, of course, but hypothetically), this kiss would have crumpled them up and thrown them out the window.
Remember when Emily asked you on the phone just yesterday if you were sure about coming to the wedding, and you had answered that of course you were sure?
You couldn't help but feel that maybe, deep down, you'd known this would happen. Deep down, you'd known that a part of you missed Jungshin. That a small but essential piece of you had gone missing when you'd left him and hadn't yet been found. And because you knew all of this deep down (deep, deep down, if you were being honest), that's what made you sure you were doing the right thing.
Well, that and because Emily was your best friend, and you would've only missed her wedding in the event of a dire, tragic, and inescapable emergency.
Speaking of Emily...
You were really not looking forward to telling her in the bridal suite tomorrow morning that her little 'Lock Them Together in a Closet' plan had actually worked. She'd never let you forget that she (and Yonghwa) were the reason you and Jungshin were back together! You'd made a pinky promise with your former ex-boyfriend to leave the past in the past, but your best friend certainly wouldn't make such a promise.
But what else are friends for, right? They're for supporting you in your time of need. They're for showing up at one of the most important events in your life.
And they're for locking you in a closet with your ex-boyfriend so the two of you will finally realize you're still meant to be.
Of that, you were sure. Absolutely, positively, completely, and utterly sure.

Ugh ugh ugh ugh ugh ugh ugh ugh ugh ugh.
UGH!
Seeing Jungshin onstage playing his bass had done two things:
Elicited an emotional and physical response you couldn't ignore.
Immediately transported you back in time.
After all, the first time you'd seen him over two years ago now, he'd been onstage playing his bass. You'd fallen for him on the spot even though you'd never been particularly drawn to musicians. There had just been something about him.
Let's go back in time for a bit, shall we? To the night you first met Jungshin.
You weren't necessarily looking forward to being a Third Wheel tonight, but it was time to admit to yourself that Emily and her new-ish boyfriend, Yonghwa, were getting pretty serious. It was very likely you were going to be a Third Wheel for the foreseeable future. And, to be quite honest, you hadn't seen Emily this happy in a relationship before, so you couldn't really be upset about it.
Plus, tonight you were going to a concert, so it would be very easy to get lost in the music and forget you were a Third Wheel. Although, you'd never heard of the band you were going to see, so there was a chance you wouldn't like their music...
When Emily had texted you a few days ago asking if you wanted to come with her and Yonghwa to see a local band playing a small venue, you had almost immediately said 'thanks but no thanks.' But before you'd had the chance to, she'd said 'Yonghwa's best friend is in the band.' You'd inwardly sighed because that changed things. That meant Emily was asking because Yonghwa wanted Emily to go to support his best friend, and that meant Emily wanted you to go to support your best friend.
"I'll be there!" you'd replied, and a few nights later, here you were!
Yonghwa had played the band's CD in the car on the way here, though, and you hadn't hated the music. It was a little bit more pop than rock, the melodies were catchy, and the lyrics were more profound than you'd expected.
You arrived at the venue early but not too early. After less than twenty minutes of catching up with Emily and subtle interrogation of Yonghwa (because, no matter how serious he was about her, you would always be ready to fight him on Emily's behalf), the lights in the tiny auditorium dimmed.
Cheers and applause broke out in the crowd, so you joined them, timidly clapping your hands as your gaze settled on the stage.
And then.
Then.
Not to be dramatic but -- and then your life changed.
One of the band members immediately caught your eye. He was tall and slender with dark hair that fell across his forehead just so. Your gaze was glued to him as he picked up a bass guitar, but you managed to take a few steps toward Yonghwa.
"Who is that?" you asked, discreetly pointing at your newly discovered Dream Man. "And is he single?"
Yonghwa burst out laughing; thankfully, the band had just started playing a song, so the sound of his guffaw got lost among the music. He leaned in closer to you so you could hear his answer: "That's Jungshin, my best friend. And yes, he's absolutely single."
A couple of hours later, Yonghwa introduced the two of you backstage, and the rest was history.
Present Day
Ugh ugh ugh ugh ugh ugh ugh ugh ugh ugh.
UGH!
But Emily was currently looking over different napkin folding options, so you couldn't fill her in on this development. Besides, you still didn't know if you wanted to even do anything about it! Just because it felt like you'd fallen for him again doesn't mean you should actually be with him again.
I mean... sure, he had just spent a good chunk of time last night explaining to you that he regretted losing you and was working on himself and trying to become a better partner. Sure, he looked as good as he ever had -- maybe even better because he'd definitely been working out, plus he'd let his hair grow out just a little. Sure, you wanted to go up on that stage right now and curl up against his chest and bury your face in his neck and feel his arms around you and be overwhelmed by his familiar scent.
But none of that meant it was a good idea to get back together with him!
...Right?
Just then, you felt your gaze connect with Jungshin's, and you suddenly realized you had been completely zoned out and staring at him.
You jumped a little, but Jungshin obviously noticed because his brows knit together just enough to show he was either confused or concerned. Probably both.
Instead of being normal about it and mouthing 'Sorry' and laughing at yourself, you whipped around, turning on your heel to face away from him.
But, of course, that caught Emily's attention.
"Hey," she whispered to you, gently nudging your side. "Are you --"
She then very obviously registered that the band was currently in the room rehearsing because her gaze flew to the stage, and she put two and two together in the blink of an eye. Her eyebrows raised, but you cut her off before she could even say anything.
"I'm good," you assured her, though your voice was strained and somewhat high-pitched. "I'm so good, you just worry about your place settings."
Emily, the smart, amazing, beautiful person she was, listened to you and turned back to the table. If she made any sort of fuss about you, it would only increase the chance of Jungshin interrupting the rehearsal to come check on you. And that was the very last thing that needed to happen right now.
After a few deep breaths, you followed Emily's lead and turned to the table, reaching out to pick up the fanciest napkin you'd ever seen. You weren't sure what to do at the moment, so you settled on fidgeting with whatever fidget-able item was closest to you -- a napkin. You focused on the feeling of the cloth between your fingers, allowing the music from Jungshin's band to drown out any coherent thoughts.
After an undetermined length of time -- it could have been seconds, it could have been minutes, it could have been hours (it wasn't hours, but you were so dazed yet also hyper-focused on the napkin at the same time that it felt like it could have been) -- you heard Emily's voice break through your muddled sea of a brain.
"What do you think, Y/N?" she asked as she delicately tapped your arm. "Which one do you like?"
Your gaze snapped to her side of the table, and you saw she was asking your opinion on which folded napkin she should have for the reception place settings.
She added, "I think I like just the double pocket fold. Simple but elegant."
You wasted no time in nodding, agreeing with her wholeheartedly. "Yes, absolutely the double pocket fold. Simple is best."
Did you actually believe that? To be honest, you had no idea right now. You probably did. Emily had exquisite taste, and the two of you almost always agreed on just about anything.
Besides! Hadn't she said not even two hours ago that no matter what happens, she'll always be on your side? The sentiment was definitely the same for you! You were always on her side, too, and if she wanted the double pocket fold napkin for her reception, then that's what she'd get!
When Emily turned back to the hotel employee standing next to them to confirm their choice, you bit the inside of your cheek and ever so slowly lifted your eyes. Without moving your head even a centimeter, you looked over at the stage. The sounds of tuning instruments and mic checks were still filling the room, so you knew they were still there, but... You found you just couldn't stop yourself. Something intangible was tugging at you, making you curious to see exactly what he was doing right now.
Unsurprisingly, Jungshin was tuning his bass. Duh! That's why he was there in the first place. He seemed quite concentrated on his task, so you figured it was somewhat safe to actually look at him rather than side-eyeing him.
But, of course, not even a second after you swiveled your head just enough to get a good look at him, he suddenly lifted his head and made eye contact with you.
Your instinct was to look away immediately, but that intangible something that was tugging at you wouldn't let you.
Jungshin's lips quirked up into a soft smile, and he stopped strumming his bass guitar to lift one hand up in a quick wave.
You did your best to smile back, truly. It certainly felt like you were smiling, but judging by the way Jungshin's expression changed from friendly to slightly troubled made you think your lips were not anywhere near a smile.
'You okay?' he mouthed.
Oh, god. How on earth were you supposed to answer that?
You were decidedly not okay right now, but he was the reason you were not okay! And if you told him 'no, I'm not okay,' he would without a doubt put down his bass, hop off stage, and come over to you to ask what was wrong.
Just being in the same very large hotel ballroom with him right now was bad enough! You'd become dumbstruck just seeing him on stage! What would happen if he actually got near you? Or if he touched you?
Deep down, you knew you were not strong enough to resist him at the moment, so you really had to prevent him from coming over here at all costs.
You hated lying to him, but you replied to him with a thumbs up all the same.
He nodded back, but his forehead was still adorably wrinkled, so you got the feeling he didn't fully believe you.
You didn't have the mental or emotional capacity to dwell on that, though, so you simply looked away to focus on your napkin again.
Well, if you looked on the bright side, the event you'd been dreading the most about this wedding trip (the rehearsal dinner) was no longer something you dreaded (because you'd already seen, spoken to, and spent time with your ex-boyfriend the previous day).
But if you didn't look on the bright side (which was much easier to do, honesty), you still had sufficient reason to dread the rehearsal dinner.
You knew Jungshin would be there because, while he was in the band playing at the reception, he was also a groomsman, and the wedding party was virtually required to attend. Based on how you left the ballroom earlier today -- in a hurry without making eye contact with him -- there was a very large chance he would find you and ask if you were feeling okay.
You still didn't know how to answer that, especially not when he was asking the question. With Emily, you could be somewhat honest and tell her that you were confused. But you certainly couldn't tell that to Jungshin! You had no idea if he still had romantic feelings for you, and even if he did, you had no idea if he wanted to get back together with you. If you told him that your conversation at dinner last night had thoroughly rattled your brain and that seeing him up on stage earlier that afternoon had pushed you to the precipice of falling for him again, it could go very badly, and you would absolutely never be able to see him again without wanting to crawl into a hole for eternity.
So, of course, that was what was looming in your mind when you arrived at the restaurant on the very top floor of the hotel -- the thought of crawling into a hole for eternity.
Needless to say, your anxiety was at an all-time high.
But... to your pleasant surprise... as the evening went on, and Jungshin didn't approach you, you felt yourself loosening up and actually allowing yourself to have a good time. You ate extremely delicious food, engaged in delightful conversation with Emily's uncle, and had one more cocktail than you probably should have.
Needless to say, you were almost the exact opposite headspace you'd been in when you'd arrived!
"Hey, Y/N," Emily called out to you as most of the guests began to depart back to their rooms (or wherever the night was taking them).
Your eyebrows shot up as your gaze locked on hers. "Hey, Em," you replied. "What do you need?"
"Our server just told me the cleaning staff is running late from another event downstairs, and even though they meant it in a way like 'you can stay longer if you want,' I took it to mean 'we should help them', so --"
"Say less, bestie," you interrupted as you pushed back your chair and stood up. "Just point me in the right direction, and I'm on it, no cap."
(Note: you always seemed to speak more in generational slang when you were tipsy.)
A beaming smile curved Emily's lips, and she gestured toward a door near the corner. "That's the supply closet slash laundry room, whatever, so if you could just start collecting the napkins?"
You answered her with a "Bet" and a salute and, like the good bridesmaid you were, followed the bride's directions.
Normally, you would've been extremely efficient with this task, but since you'd had one more cocktail than you probably should have, there was nothing stopping you from dancing and skipping around as you flicked each napkin from the tables. It had been a much better night than you'd expected, and you were just in a really good mood!
Since it was a fairly small restaurant, though, it still didn't take long to gather up every napkin. Just a few minutes after Emily made her request, you were making your way to the door in the corner, the supply closet slash laundry room.
As soon as you slid through the door, you caught sight of three sets of washers and dryers. Obviously, you didn't want to actually start a load of laundry, but you could at least put the napkins in the washer. That would be helpful for the staff, right? It would at least be better than dumping the napkins on the floor!
A quick glance around the closet -- it was a spacious closet, but a closet nonetheless -- didn't help you immediately locate a light switch, so you would just have to try your best to get these napkins in the washer before the door closed on you.
You took a deep breath and then scurried over to the washer closest to the door. But just as you attempted to open the washer door with your elbow, someone else appeared in the doorway.
...We can probably guess who that someone else was, right?
You froze momentarily as you saw Jungshin with an armload of tablecloths.
"Oh, here, let me help," he murmured as he sidled up next to you, shifting the tablecloths to one arm so he could open the washer door for you.
You didn't even have time to reply with 'Thank you' before you heard the closet door close shut.
And then you heard it lock.
...Oh, god.

It was honestly nothing short of a miracle that you were awake and functioning right now (even if you were functioning at the lowest possible level) let alone standing in front of a mirror in your hotel room putting on lipstick.
Red lipstick.
Red lipstick was tricky to put on even on the best days, but when you felt like this? When you were running on so little sleep and hadn't consumed a single drop of liquid caffeine yet? When you couldn't quiet your mind because every single word Jungshin had said at dinner last night was racing through your brain?
You truly couldn't believe you'd even been able to open the tube.
And, of course, you had no idea how to tell Emily about all of this. The wedding party was having brunch this morning, and everything was cherry-themed -- cherry mimosas, cherry french toast, cherry blossoms adorning the table. Red lipstick was a must, obviously, and your instinct was to teasingly complain about it to Emily. Asking someone to put on red lipstick after having such a distressing conversation with your ex-boyfriend the previous evening was basically a crime!
But how could you? Bringing this up would undoubtedly ruin the entire gathering, and there was nothing you wanted to do less than even think of ruining anything related to Emily's wedding.
Still, though.
You had no idea how you could act with a semblance of normality. Jungshin's words were still stuck in your head, and you couldn't see them getting unstuck any time soon.
You leaving... everything you said... it was a huge wake-up call. I'd had no idea you were so exhausted, and I was so embarrassed that I hadn't noticed. I'm still embarrassed. And I'm sorry.
You hadn't known you'd needed an apology until he'd given you one, but no matter how much you'd wanted to say 'thank you,' you hadn't been able to. Jungshin had kind of just blurted this out after the two of you had been sitting in silence for a good five minutes, so you'd been kind of in shock hearing his words.
(And, side note, you hadn't been surprised in the least that Jungshin hadn't been able to last long without talking.)
You were so right. A relationship should be a partnership above all else, and you took on way more than I realized. You did all of the heavy lifting. I was a terrible partner, and I will regret that for the rest of my life. I'll regret... losing you. For the rest of my life.
Your heart jumped into your throat now just thinking about it.
How were you supposed to be normal knowing that your ex-boyfriend would regret losing you for the rest of his life?!
And Emily knew you too well enough. She would immediately catch on that something had happened, and it's not like you could lie to her.
You let out a soft sigh before inhaling quickly, holding your breath, and finishing up with your lipstick.
There was no way you were getting out of this, so you might as well just get it over with.
Okay, no, that sounds bad. You didn't want to get brunch over with. You were looking forward to eating delicious food with your best friend!
You just... weren't looking forward to talking about last night. For your sanity, you would simply tell yourself you wouldn't have to.
If your internal clock was correct, it only took about five minutes after sitting down at the pink and red, cherry-covered table at the hotel's restaurant before Emily announced she had to go to the powder room. And then turned to look right at you.
"Y/N, can you come with me?" she asked innocently.
But you knew better.
She knew something was up, and you were so tempted to say, 'Oh, no thank you.'
Instead, you smiled and nodded and murmured a 'Sure.'
As soon as the door to the restroom closed behind you, Emily whirled around on her heel, her eyebrows raised halfway up her forehead.
"What's wrong?" she asked, her tone quite serious. "Is it Jungshin?"
You'd already opened your mouth to reply with 'What do you mean?' but then she'd mentioned him. Your mouth snapped shut.
"Did something happen? Did you see him already?" she continued, obviously concerned when you'd quickly stopped yourself from replying.
So, you let out a soft sigh. You shut your eyes and bit the inside of your cheek.
And then you answered, "Yes and yes."
You heard Emily gasp, and then you felt her take your hands. "What? What?! Tell me everything," she hissed.
"We don't have time for everything right now, but I'll give you the long story short," you relented.
Emily simply nodded fervently, and you let out another sigh, this one deeper and longer than the last.
"You know that I moved my plane ticket so we wouldn't be on the same flight, but he ended up doing the same thing, so we still ended up on the same flight after all, and then we ran into each other in the airport and he asked if he could hop in my rideshare and he took my luggage and put it in the trunk without me even asking him to do it and he asked if we could get dinner so we went to get pizza and he said that me breaking up with him was a huge wake-up call and he regrets losing me and will regret it for the rest of his life and he has been doing a lot of self-reflection the past few months and is actively working on being more thoughtful because he never wants what happened to us to happen again."
Emily's eyes had widened after your first sentence, and her expression only became more and more shocked the more you told her.
Before she could say anything, though, you whispered, "I barely slept last night because everything he said kept running through my mind. I don't know what to do or if I should even do anything!"
"What did you say to him after he told you all of that?" she asked.
"Not much," you admitted. "I was too overwhelmed, and he didn't push me to say anything. In fact, I think his exact words were, 'You don't have to say anything or ever even talk to me again. I just wanted you to know that I don't and have never blamed you, and you were one-hundred percent right.' I did tell him it was nice to hear that, but that's about it. What do I do?!"
You had opened your eyes by this point, and Emily was now searching them with the most empathetic gaze.
"...Do you want to do anything?" she finally asked.
That... was actually a great question.
"I have no idea," you answered truthfully. "Am I constantly thinking about him? Yes. But I don't know if that's just because he's my ex and I'm seeing him for the first time, or if it's because... I miss him, and I still want to be with him. Y'know?"
Emily's forehead wrinkled as she knit her brows together, obviously concerned and worried about you.
"I'm so sorry --" she began in a quiet voice.
"No," you cut her off before she could finish that sentence. "Don't you dare apologize. It's your wedding, and I am absolutely thrilled to be here, and I knew I was going to see him. I was prepared for that. I just wasn't prepare for... this. But that's not your fault, and if you even think of apologizing again, I will cross my eyes in every single wedding party picture. You got that?"
Your best friend's expression changed from 'concerned and worried about you' to 'you're something else.' She rolled her eyes good-naturedly as a smirk tugged at her lips.
"Okay, fine," she relented. "I won't apologize, but I am sorry you're confused. And I am here for you, you got that? I'm almost a married woman now. I have so much relationship advice -- good relationship advice -- it's not even funny."
You chuckled despite what she'd just said then assured her with a quick nod. "Don't worry. I will ask you for every single piece of advice."
"Until I go on my honeymoon."
"Right, of course."
"Because I will be totally unreachable on my honeymoon unless it's a complete and utter emergency. Which it might be! If you guys get back together while I'm gone, that classifies as an emergency, and you'd better tell me!"
Just hearing the words 'if you guys get back together' made your heart skip a beat. You weren't sure if it was a good skip or a bad skip, though.
"Absolutely," you murmured. "I'll only reach out if... that happens. I think it's a big 'If,' but. Still."
Emily simply nodded before pulling you in for a tight hug. "No matter what happens, I'll always be on your side."
You hummed in reply as you hugged her back, a wave of comfort washing over you as you smelled the perfume you'd gotten her as a birthday present a few years ago.
No matter what happens, I'll always be on your side.
Honestly, that lifted a weight off your shoulders. You had no idea what would happen with Jungshin -- if anything happened at all! If you even wanted anything to happen. But no matter what did or didn't happen, you still had your best friend. You still had your family, your job, your apartment.
With or without Jungshin, you had a lot to be thankful for, and you couldn't forget that.
"I think that was the best french toast I've ever had," you declared, your arm looped through Emily's as the pair of you and the rest of the bridesmaids dispersed from the hotel's restaurant.
"Right?!" Emily gasped. "I'm going to be dreaming about it for --"
Her ringtone interrupted her, and when you glanced at her screen like the nosy friend you were, you saw Yonghwa was calling her.
"Oop, hold on," she murmured before accepting his call and bringing her phone to her ear. "Hey you."
Despite the fact your love life was nothing short of, to quote Winston Churchill, "riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma," you couldn't help but smile at the look on Emily's face, the tone of her voice as she spoke to her husband-to-be.
(And, yes, Winston Churchill had been describing World War II when he said that, but was your love life also kind of a war zone? Figuratively speaking, yes. It was.)
"Oh, really? We just got out of brunch, so I can swing by, for sure," your friend continued.
You tried to lean in a bit so you could hear what Yonghwa was saying, but Emily said, "Okay, see you in a sec," and hung up before you got the chance.
"I need to go to the reception hall to go over the place settings," she told you, tightening her hold on your arm just slightly. "Would you like to come with?"
While place setting approval didn't quite sound like the most fun you could have with wedding prep (that award went to cake tasting, obviously), you would never pass up an opportunity to both spend time with Emily and help her make decisions. So, you followed her as she changed course, heading toward the hotel's rather large ballroom where the reception would be in just a couple of days.
Your eyes widened as soon as you walked into the grand, beautifully decorated room, and your arm slipped out of Emily's as you stood in place while she headed to her fiancé.
"Wow," you whispered to yourself as you gazed all around. There were flowers everywhere, a team of people was hanging up strings of lights from each wall to the middle of the ceiling, and yet more people were carrying out tables and chairs and covering them with elegant sky blue cloths.
In short, it looked absolutely magical in here.
Just as you were finished soaking everything in and were beginning to make your way over to where Emily and Yonghwa were standing, you heard the very familiar click of an amp turning on.
Your eyes immediately shifted to a stage set up on the opposite end of the room, and what you saw on that stage made you freeze right where you stood.
Had Yonghwa not known or not mentioned that Jungshin's band would be in here rehearsing and doing a souncheck? Or had he told Emily, and Emily hadn't mentioned it?
Either way, your heart jumped up into your throat when you saw Jungshin slip his bass guitar strap over his head and plug in the amp cord.
God, why were musicians so... so... just so? Y'know?
Watching him pluck at the strings, gently tuning it, his eyebrows furrowed in concentration... your mouth went dry. More than a million butterflies invaded your stomach.
And you feared you were very much in jeopardy of falling for him all over again.
Shit.
