Sweden in a nutshell. The Duck Vader was quite scary, really. But I believe in the forest that may be in my mind all the time, made me feel peaceful thinking about the forest and the moose there. And Madicken with her umbrella will always be one of my childhood spirit. #sweden #duckvader #moose #madicken #junibacken #astridlindgren #forest #starwars https://www.instagram.com/p/BqvKFFMgE4Z/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=twq0lzg8m0oc
One of my favorite experiences in Sweden was visiting Junibacken, a children’s museum centered around Swedish children’s literature. It was so perfectly constructed to be hands on and engaging that even as an adult I felt my inner child awaken. Yes, traveling with children means there are some things you can’t do but it also means you get to experience a different side to the places you visit. To see things through the eyes of a child is one of the greatest blessings and I highly recommend this attraction if you find yourself in Stockholm with kids. Leave a ❤️in the comments if you grew up watching Pippi Longstocking and recognized her kitchen from the pictures. Pippi Långstrump is actually the creation of Astrid Lindgren, one of Sweden’s most beloved authors. While my sister V was here two weeks ago with her family, we made sure not to miss an afternoon at Junibacken, located on Stockholm’s royal and museum-rich island of Djurgården. Junibacken is a children’s playhouse based on Swedish children’s author Astrid Lindgren’s stories. Ms. Lindgren has written children’s books whose characters, most notably Pippi Longstocking, are loved by little readers all around the world. In Stockholm, children can experience her stories brought to life at Junibacken. I was beyond excited to bring my two nieces here, aged 6 and 2.5, the perfect candidates for a Junibacken visit (especially on a day that was particularly rainy and so forced us to stay indoors)!
Junibacken boasts a Storybook Square, with cobblestone streets and street lights, where children can visit Astrid Lindgren’s characters in their homes. My nieces and my daughter S particularly enjoyed the jewelry shop (where I purchased a large purple diamond ring) and the café (where I was served tray upon tray of cinnamon buns and princess cakes).
Junibacken also offers a room with outdoor play sets, including a boat, a giant tree with colorful flowers, a carousel, and slides.
S loved staring down at the fish, who swam around on the floor beneath her!
Storybook Train, a narrated train ride through Ms. Lindgren’s stories, boasts special effects for lighting, sound, and displays. Not to be missed, especially for those of us who already love fantasy-based rides (AKA Disneyland lovers)!
Junibacken also invites children to come explore Villa Villekulla, or Pippi Longstocking’s home, where visiting children can ride Pippi’s horse, Old Man, play in her kitchen, and ride a slide. Pure magic for little ones! S and I enjoyed sitting nearby in the small play space for babies with its fun, soft building blocks, while my nieces played in Pippi’s house. Enjoying our view out the window was also a lovely way to pass the time!
Junibacken puts on theatrical performances and offers a restaurant for easy-dining with children. We brought in our own lunch and sat at one of the restaurant’s tables while the girls ooh’d and aah’d over all of the fun, whimsical decor!
I may be an adult, but I know how much I would have enjoyed coming here as a child, and so I am more than happy to do so with my nieces and my own daughter! To top off the afternoon, we walked over to a nearby food stand at the foot of Djurgårdsbrunn (Djurgården Bridge) for the best ice cream in town: thick and creamy vanilla (I like mine in a waffle cone) topped with karamell strössel, the crunchiest, most scrumptious color sprinkles you could ever want on your ice cream (so good that sometimes my husband D asks me if we can drive over to Djurgården just to get some). S seemed to approve. A fun-filled kid-friendly day in the bag!

A new playground featuring Moomins now open at Stockholm Airport, Sweden!
Junibacken, a children’s museum and fantasy house in Stockholm, has many years done collaboration with Stockholm Arlanda Airport, where Junibacken’s playgrounds have cheered up the life of travelling children. Today on April 26th at Terminal 5 opened a new play area which reminds of Junibacken’s Storybook Square.
