Last night my three best friends and I were all in the same place -- sort of! We’re using technology (aka using two FaceTime calls and feeling like an Apple commercial) to keep laughing together, despite being in three different states. Though I hang out with Aliza all the time since she’s working at Smith this summer and I just visited Quincy in Brooklyn last weekend, there’s something really wonderful and fun about the four of us together. I’m trying to ignore the impending year apart as we go off in our separate study abroad directions (me - Denmark fall, Aliza - Australia fall, Quincy - either London or Edinburgh spring, Katie - DC fall).
A message to fellow juniors
You know what, guys? With all this junior year nonsense about getting a 2300+ SAT score, keeping up your ridiculously high averages, balancing a crapton of extracurriculars, and trying to get into an elite college, I feel like some of you (myself included) have forgotten that there's more to life than school school school. These past few months have, without a doubt, been the toughest months of my entire life thus far and I'm honestly surprised I'm still functioning. As I'm sure most of you can relate to, all of this stress and general feeling of shittiness and inadequacy comes from school.
Did you ever consider that maybe, just maybe things don't have to be this way? Maybe, you can actually spend your remaining high school years being a normal high school kid, not being miserable/depressed/anxious?
You know, you actually can do all of these things and make your life that much less miserable. That physics test tomorrow? Don't study for it. It doesn't actually matter in the grand scheme of life (or your grades, for that matter, because the more classes you take, the less each class individually contributes to your GPA). That APUSH hw that's keeping you up all night? Skip it for one day. You normally get shit done anyway, one missing hw won't ruin your entire reputation as a good student. You need a break. You're human. You have every right to be happy and not submit to the misery that junior year brings. You can enjoy yourself, even though it seems impossible. You just need to set your priorities straight.
"Well, what about college?" You know what? College doesn't have higher priority over your mental wellbeing. In fact, college should be the least of your concerns, because I know you're all really bright students, so you'll do fine no matter where you go. It's about time people realise that college isn't everything. Getting into an Ivy isn't going to mean anything if you're depressed and fatigued. It's hard to wrap your mind around that idea, but seriously, college isn't that big of a deal. Just go with the flow.
What I'm trying to say is, if you're feeling really shitty because of school, relax and take an evening off to do things that make you happy. It's not a big deal, because everyone needs a break and you'll be happier. Really, I think you all need a break.
tl;dr Pause your hw and go be happy. That's a command.
they postponed the fucking SAT and I just feel agsjslsndvodek$:&:@):&/9/
I am super stressed out. My grades suck so far this year. Of all years to mess up, it had to be junior year. Oh well, at least I'm not trying to get into any big time colleges.
