Do you believe this role is given to him because of his age, intelligence, his captaining of the airship itself? i personally believe cid has leadership qualities beneath his crass exterior . he’s been captain for years for a reason , of course , and even shinra recognizes his rank so it’s an Actual Thing that people often put their lives and their dreams in cid’s calloused hands . the people of rocket town have faith in him , even after he hits the emergency turn - off switch on the rocket launch those years ago . no one’s stepped up to take the reigns from him . no one talks about hating or resenting the captain ; there’s still respect beneath it all .

i don’t think he wanted to be party lead .

not since he joins the party later on and cloud’s already the established leader . therefore , i don’t think he has this inner drive nor desire to always be the top dog , rank - wise . he’s just as content to follow as he is to lead .

barret confesses he’s realized he isn’t capable of leading the party . no one else speaks up . they’re standing on the bridge of the highwind and cid awakens and suddenly he’s deemed the new party lead . at first he doesn’t want it . it’s not until barret’s speech that he finally agrees and yells “ follow me ! ”

but ! i believe there had to have been some off - screen events that solidified barret’s faith in cid to lead . barret isn’t the type to put faith in someone just because , like the way he doesn’t believe cloud’s an ally until he proves himself later on . so i think there were times when cloud didn’t know what to do and cid spoke up and everyone agreed with his suggestion , whether it was when or where to rest , which direction to go , or what to do next . hell , maybe even what to eat . but i think little things had to happen along the way for someone like barret to believe in cid more than himself , when we see him as the AVALANCHE leader during the first part of the game .

i think barret realized leadership and taking the commanding role is something cid’s accustomed to after all these years . i think that’s another reason why he chooses cid ; he knows cid already has experience leading others , and besides , they do need his airship .

it’s rare that sephiroth takes a break like this.

not that he isn’t permitted breaks, but rather, he doesn’t typically indulge them in the usual fashion. a wandering to the vending machines, or a walk outside, or a reprieve in the library for leisure, or a visit to his commanders—even simply taking a seat on one of the couches in the lounge. none are what sephiroth usually pursues, but his last appointment with the good doctor involved an increase in his mako dosage, and his last appointment was yesterday.

which means a migraine and weariness today. mid-morning, he’s finished two cups of tea, praying the touch of caffeine will help soothe the tension in his head away. maybe it’s working, maybe it needs more time. maybe another cup. it’s too early to tell.

his feet carry him from his office around the time of a reasonable place to halt in today’s proceedings. the SOLDIER lounge is, thankfully, mostly empty, and there is a particular couch near the window where he finds precisely what he means to find.

or rather, who. genesis rhapsodos sits, book in hand as usual, the pale sunlight streaming in behind him and haloing golden around his head of red hair. in the silhouette, sephiroth can’t make out the title of the book he holds, but it’s of little consequence. he’ll likely hear about it anyway as he makes his way over, a little slower than his usual stride, and wordlessly takes up the remainder of the couch, laying down and placing his head in genesis’ lap.

CLOUD & HEROISM.

this is something that i’m surprised nobody has brought up before, honestly. the whole topic of heroism was something central to the story of crisis core / the characters within that title. although it applies fore-mostly to the SOLDIERs, it is an overarching theme in cloud’s story; of all that he wants to be / what he does become, & what he essentially refuses to acknowledge that he is, by the time the events of the og transpire.

at the beginning of his story, cloud firmly believes that ‘ a hero ’ is something he wants to become. somebody powerful, incredible and brave who fights to protect those they care about, and are adored by everyone in the process. as a lonely kid in a backwater town, what more could he possibly want ? the silver elite, ( sephiroth ) , was pretty much the embodiment of everything he hoped to become & achieve in his life, and is where his obsession concerning becoming a hero stemmed from. something that everybody around him would call an unattainable dream , but that he was determined to disprove.

ever since he was a kid, cloud has been ... kinda scrawny. as he got older and left town to pursue his dreams of becoming a SOLDIER, that fact of life never did change. a little shorter, weaker and clumsier than those around him, it was probably to be expected that he wouldn’t make it into the elite ranks. that said, if nothing else, he was determined. ( although incredibly disheartened by his inability to become a SOLDIER, he kept his head held high. his dream to be a hero wasn’t necessarily still out of the question. ) upon meeting zack, i believe that two very important feelings came into play.

envy & admiration: two things that zack evoked within him, with the latter far overpowering the former. everything that zack is and was, is all that cloud had hoped to be. as much as cloud wished that he could still make it into SOLDIER alongside his newfound buddy, i feel as though zack is what made him realise that he didn’t need to become that very specific thing in order to make a difference / help others. it was, primarily, zack who taught him that the heart is what matters; your intent, and the act of simply stepping up to a challenge and facing it head-on.

THE BURDEN OF THE TITLE.

from the very moment cloud lifts the buster sword & makes for midgar, he has begun to carry the burden of that title; he just doesn’t know that he has yet. i’m a firm believer that cloud doesn’t inherently see himself as ‘ zack ’ throughout the events of the original game, but rather, the 1st class SOLDIER he had always aspired to be. ( the two lines do blur / there are events in which he had been there watching zack, and sees himself in zack’s place so as to make sense of it ) but all the same, it is from that moment that he ... begins to think of himself as a dictionary definition hero , of sorts. ( this tying into his merc work in both the og & remake. it is more of a career, less of an honourable mindset ) less the kind that he’d been when he blindly charged towards sephiroth in CC / more the type he’d fantasised about becoming as a kid, angry and alone. deep down, he knows that he’s carrying a weight; that it shouldn’t feel like this, but it does. that being a hero requires this kind of straining and lack of understanding / second-guessing himself.

the title itself is something he grows into. each small act of kindness / each part of himself that he recovers constructs a picture of the hero that he always wanted to be, and that zack knew he would become & would find within himself. somewhere along the way, though; wracked with confusion / repression of trauma / controlled and gaslit by jenova and sephiroth, he loses track of all of that. i feel as though, because of all that he did / almost did, all of the lives taken, or that he couldn’t save —— all of the mess made, that he can’t help but blame himself for in some capacity, he can and never will see himself as the perfect hero he’d always envisioned himself becoming as a child.

by the end of it all, the title of hero is something so stained in blood and responsibility that cloud isn’t particularly happy to crown the title upon his head. when used by other people, aware that it holds the same set of values & sentimental ties he does still hold dear in his heart, he will often brush it off; find it embarrassing or misplaced, despite all the good that he’s done. cloud acknowledges that by most definitions it is what a lot of people would be right in calling him / it is, in a way, what zack would be proud of him becoming , but ... the less tarnished ( by his biased perception of things, at least ) and more true definition of what a hero is, he believes, lies in those he loved who lay down their lives.

A WALKING HISTORY PAGE / a reminder of times long passed. genesis rhapsodos may not have been his friend, nor his hero, but he was once still an inspiration. he is inevitable. a catastrophic & unwarranted kick to the groin of an example that his past is not something long forgotten. it continues in small ways; in the rise and fall of the distorted seraph, and now in the unprecedented realisation that another person ( —— creature ? ) subject to a greater, awful plan still exists upon this earth. he isn’t alone / a dangerous thought.

his gaze is fixed upon the elder man, unwavering, faltering only when genesis’ eyes catch hold of and lock onto his own. in the way that his brows furrow and eyelids flutter; adjust to the scene before him as though to ensure he isn’t losing it again. ‘ he’s ... alive ? ’ is all that cloud can think, simplistic as it is. two words, but they hold so much weight. fingers twitch with uncertainty / with hesitation, and travel to the hilt of the sword at his back. there’s no telling what kind of person genesis is, if a person at all. he can only hope ...

“ you’re —— ” the blond sets one foot forward, eyes narrowing & lips pursing. if this is an illusion, it’s a damn lucid one. he speaks through the lump in his throat, “ genesis ? ”
