VINYL HAUL: Jupiter Records - Wilmington, Delaware [USA]
The wife and I decided to do some post Thanksgiving digging as we embarked on the holiday commute from North East, Maryland to Philadelphia. I decided to hit up Foursquare for a recommendation on the route. The wife asked, “why?” I said, “because we don’t own a single record from Delaware.” Apparently a logical response for anyone who likes vinyl as much as we do. We found Jupiter Records in Wilmington, DE. It’s located in a small and quant suburb. The shop even has a porch. I thought that was cool. Before we were even inside one of the employees greeted us, invited us in and even showed us around. A super touch. The shop was filled with 10 - 15 varied record store characters. I love seeing 14 - 70 years-olds all digging. It’s a thread of connection (or addiction), we all have. The wife and I split up and dug in.

Plasticland - “Color Appreciation”
What caught my eye: Psychedelia from the 1980′s
Hailing from Milwaukee, Plasticland have a sound that harkens back to the vintage garage rock of 1960′s England mixed with a touch of LSD. They were two decades late at the time, but I don’t usually see 1980′s psychedelia in the bins and this struck me as unique pickup. Color Appreciation is the band’s first full length release and was put out in 1984. In an age of new wave, this cover stood out.

Les Rita Mitsouko - “The No Comprendo”
What caught my eye: Her face. Her pose. The graphic design.
Les Rita Mitsouko were founded in the spring of 1979 by guitarist Fred Chichin and singer Catherine Ringer. They were a popular Euro band that toured alongside The Smiths and Kid Creole. During the recording of their second album, famed French New Wave filmmaker Jean Luc-Goddard filmed the process for his Soigne Ta Droite documentary. No Comprendo was released in 1986, right before the band moved to NYC where they mixed it up with Sparks, Boy George, Michael Hutchence and even Iggy Pop. Chichin died from cancer in 2007, but Ringer continues to produce music to this day.

Miles Davis - Friday Night In Person at the Blackhawk, San Francisco
What caught my eye: Her face. His pose. Graphic design.
This is Volume I of a 1961 live performance at the Blackhawk nightclub in San Francisco. Miles Davis had never recorded live at a club before these sessions. The cover was shot by Leigh Wiener and featured Miles Davis with his soon to be second wife, Francis Taylor. Robin D.G. Kelley of the New York Times argued in a 2001 article that iconic images such as these perpetrated “a masculine culture that aspired to be like a pimp, that embraced the cool performative styles of the players, the macks, the hustlers, who not only circulated in the jazz world but whose walk and talk also drew from the well of black music.” Read the Wiki for more…

Elke Sommer - “Love In Any Language”
What caught my eye: Sexy Dusty Springfield look with a Nordic name.
Elke Sommer was born in Berlin in 1940. Her family evacuated during the second world war and she migrated to England after her father’s death. Discovered by film director Vittoria De Sica, she started appearing in films in the late 1950′s and because a quick sex symbol before moving to Hollywood in the 1960′s (dig for her Playboy spreads from 64′-67′). She stared alongside James Garner, Dick Van Dyke, Bob Hope, Dean Martin and Paul Newman. She speaks seven languages. Yeah, that’s a true blue sexy woman. Love in any Language is a lounge album that covers some obscure classics.

King Floyd
What caught my eye: That hat. The name on the hat.
King Floyd was born in 1945 and hails from New Orleans. Getting his start busking, he later did a stint in the military before heading to New York City and eventually settling in Los Angeles (can’t blame him). He returned to New Orleans after struggling to make ends meet in Los Angeles. A good move for his career. He ran into producer Wardell Quezerque who he recorded “Groove Me” with. It was a huge hit and you’ve heard it a million times. He wrote the song while working in a box factory in East L.A. in the honor of a young college girl on the staff. He was even going to give her the lyrics, but she abruptly quit and he never saw her again.

What caught my eye: It’s Star Wars.
The new one is coming out and we wanted to be prepared. This is also going into my son’s collection. He isn’t born yet, but we’ll get him started on vinyl regardless.

Today, I had to pleasure of spending some one-on-one time with the plentiful and colourful collection of records available at Jupiter Records located at 2200 Marsh Road in Wilmington DE. Walking into this record shop was actually a happy accident since I was already in the area for another excursion and this was just around the corner. I had talked to a guy working at the Princeton Record Exchange awhile back and mentioned that he has a friend who works in Jupiter and I should check it out sometime... So today was, randomly, that day! Excellent collections. Oddball deco all over that's heavily cult and vinyl-centric. Their walls are 3 different colors: bubble gum pink, lilac, and mellow yellow. They all came from the clearance section of the paint store- misfit colors from batches people didn't like. Well I loved it. They had tons of sections devoted to Jazz (new and old), punk, metal, rock- you name it even, a section called "Weird Henry" for miscellaneous recordings aka "Don't Do Drugs Kids", a storybook soundtrack for skies and clouds, sound effects.... Anyway here's my loot: - The 5.6.7.8's self-titled [Japanese Garage lady trio!] - Radiohead The Bends [My personal favourite Radiohead record, finally get to spin it now instead of clicking repeat on iTunes, so far bliss- currently listening to it now] - Little Richard's Greatest Hits ['Cause this grrrl can't help it] - Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band- Trout Mask Replica [An avant-garde weirdo essential] - The Nicotine Scene [Sung and spoken, jokes on SMOKES!. Ha- couldn't resist.]
