The knock on the front door was certainly unexpected, to say the least. Rikki barely moved into her new apartment in this new country, and already someone is knocking on her door. Is this some kind of Japanese custom?

Part of Rikki wanted to just ignore the whole thing and hope the person would go away. But another part of Rikki was curious to know who could it be. She feared that someone had tracked her down already. She had to go look and find out. 

Bringing an eye to the peephole, Rikki peered into the hallway of the apartment complex. A girl, who couldn’t possibly be any older than Rikki herself, stood in front of the doorway. She seemed calm as she awaited for Rikki to answer and she carried a platter. 

Okay now if Rikki didn’t answer this door, she was going to feel bad about it. And Rikki hated feeling bad about things. 

Rikki swiftly unlocked the front door and swung it open. Should she smile? Definitely shouldn’t appear angry or upset. It wouldn’t help Rikki if she was on bad terms with her neighbors--or whatever this girl was if she wasn’t a neighbor. 

“Hi there,” Rikki greeted. She cleared her throat. “What can I do for you?”
