ai fanart for all reasons stinks forever and makes me mad always, but I’ve been frustratingly upset all day about seeing some of [one of the 3 wrestlers I regularly draw]. people make fanart for a billion reasons and some are about being popular and making cool things, but if you’re making ‘I really love this guy and want to express it’ fanart, it’s just beyond me doing that with ai. your skill level is irrelevant to making ‘I love this guy’ fanart. if you’d like to improve at it then the work is an extension of loving them, and then yay your art improved thanks to them too! making ‘I love this guy and he is so special to me and deserves a depiction’ fanart involves so much mortifying ordeal, decision making, observation, it’s a nice way to pass time, it’s exciting when it looks Right, and if it visibly looks like it was made by someone with heart eyes then all the better. it’s not like this was made with malicious intent to pass it off as actual fanart — we’re at a stage with ai now where people just openly post it for what it is. they care him so felt he would look nice as art. and now you can just make art appear. there is so little fanart in our tiny fandom ecosystem I think any ai (whether malicious or open) that slips in is a bad thing, but it just sucks extra when it’s like. I make art of this guy because I find him neat and I love picking out these little details and making decisions, I like thinking about him, I like being able to show other people this romanticised stylised version of him, and when wrestlers work so hard creatively it’s cool to do something creative in return. those things are missing in genai ~art~, it sucks ass that you can just think hmm I’d love to see him as art I’ll just make some art appear to express my feelings (never mind the prehistoric concept of commissioning someone) and whatever comes out it’ll be great. ai always stinks but sometimes it’s something very specific and just makes me a misery all day long before I can get over it and go back to making stuff 🫠
