Question for Ms. Birbs! I like to believe the Winter Soldier still lurks somewhere inside Bucky, but what would you think it would take to trigger him, especially now that the codes don’t work?
(That sounded more villainous than i intended oops, but i’m genuinely curious what you think, or if you think that version of him is even still in there able to be activated!)
i think we actually saw some of the winter solider come out in 1x05 (during the fight scene with john walker) and he came out as pure violent rage.
bucky was incredibly cold, distant, and even in the scene following had a difficult time vocalizing himself to sam & jaoquin. he was acting like how he'd been in madripoor, if not more irritated.
i think the winter soldier is now more of an idea — the idea that bucky could, if prompted, commit really brutal acts of violence while on complete autopilot and not aware or not considering his actions. there's an element of surrendered control there, too, which i think is his biggest hurdle he's gotten over. so, what remains is a fractured part of his personality.
bucky said to steve that even though it wasn't him he did those things, the real bucky was still there deep down. i think that applies to the winter soldier. after all, bucky spent so many years of his life as him. it's hard to pull away from a learned behavior that also operated as a survival tactic.
i think extreme stress would be enough to cause bucky to snap back into mannerisms and behavior of the winter soldier, and extreme anger would definitely give him enough tunnel vision to lose sight of outside factors that would usually bring him to a halt.
he fights for people he loves but it's also a double edged sword because sometimes the fight is too much, and he can lose himself in the violence because it's a pattern he'd become accustomed to.
i think it's less of the notebook trigger and more situational triggers now!
