Day 23 of drawing Ditto...

By day I wove the web, and in the night by torchlight, I unwove it // ἔνθα καὶ ἠματίη μὲν ὑφαίνεσκον μέγαν ἱστόν νύκτας δ᾽ ἀλλύεσκον, ἐπεὶ δαΐδας παραθείμην
Odyssey 19.149–150. Emily Wilson translation.
a weaving based on Dora Wheeler's "Penelope Unraveling Her Work at Night", which is one of my favorite works that looks woven but is actually embroidered. I wanted to try out deborah silver's split-shed weaving technique, so I chose polychrome taqueté with linen and cashmere. I maybe should have chosen an easier technique with fewer colors to start, but here we are! on the right side, I left the uppermost warp threads bare to show the unraveling.

"what's going on in that head of yours?" nothing i want to be a part of
some of you seem to be under the unfortunate impression that i enjoy finishing things. i enjoy making things

& honestly there's no debate to be had the zendaya earrings are orders of magnitude worse than kim kardashian wearing that marilyn dress. yes that piece was a one of a kind unique textile made so specifically for marilyn monroe she had to be sewn into it. at the end of the day it was a ~70 year old usamerican cultural artefact being repurposed by an american for an american cultural event and everyone involved knows exactly where the dress came from + what happened to it + where it went afterwards. zendaya is wearing the looted (or forged) cultural heritage of a people her government is currently bombing & whose lives they have been deliberately making unliveable for decades to a movie premiere that has fuck all to do with iran. we don't know where those discs came from where they were found or by whom & we never will. AND the jeweller appears to have altered them substantially from their original condition. destroying a people's cultural heritage at the same time you destroy their country + their lives so you can look good on a red carpet One Time i want to fucking hurl
The earrings, worn by Zendaya at The Odyssey press tour, are believed to be 2,000-3,000 years old and come at a time when the US is bombing
An archaeologist quoted in the article says "the point of these earrings is not to showcase legitimate ancient artistry, it is to fetishize the past, to be a commodity, stolen from the elite, circulated illegally, and immorally…this is about class signalling."
Zirrar Ali, London-based author and expert on Islamic history, art, and architecture, told The New Arab.
"Adorning artefacts, whether from museums or private collections, is often seen as harmless, but can in fact constitute a display of power and domination: one culture asserting ownership over the heritage of another,” he added.
“The practice of taking jewellery and other artefacts, especially those associated with the royal courts of great empires of the past, the Mughals, the Safavids, and others, and then allowing actors and celebrities to adorn them sends a clear message: not only will we not return what we took from you, because we consider ourselves more worthy custodians, but we also continue to occupy the symbolic position of monarchs and rulers over the lands from which these artefacts were removed,” he explained.
I really liked these quotes from this man from that article.

it's a well-known fact in the textile crafting community that "making objects from textiles" is an entirely separate hobby from "having a collection of materials to make things with."
crafters often refer to this collection as a "stash" or a "hoard."
it's normal to have, but sometimes comes with a certain awkwardness.
the problem is that it takes a very long time to make things from textiles - and it is extremely quick, fun and easy to get more materials.
Presents, impulse purchases, leftovers from other projects, things you bought FULLY intending to make something that you changed your mind about...
Another problem is that you genuinely DO have a plan for the materials! your intentions and desires are THERE!
and admitting that it isn't going to happen - or that your mind has changed, or you're no longer able to do them - can be really painful!
it's incredibly hard to say: "we are not the people who can do these things. we are not the people who WILL do these things."
but sometimes you need to.
it's a natural part of life. it might feel painful to let go of things that you really want to use, but won't. But clearing them out - and the attached guilt and shame - will make room for a lot more things in your life. Room for things you'll use. Room for the projects you'll do.
Room and space - not for hanging on to the shades of the ambitions and intentions and people you aren't - not being held for lives you don't have - but room and space for who you are today, and who you'll be tomorrow, and for the things you'll do.
Room and space to grow.

https://bit.ly/AccessibleShakespeareStreamingSurvey
Hello everyone, different post to normal! My friend @knottreally is looking for survey participants for their masters research on the accessibility of on-demand live-recorded Shakespeare productions.
Can't afford the streaming services? Tell me. Glad you can watch from home because actual theatres are inaccessible for you? Tell me. Streamed something really accessible but it wasn't Shakespeare? Tell me. Never managed to find a show you wanted to watch that actually had audio description? Tell me. Only ever streamed shows illegally uploaded to YouTube - bestie, this survey is anonymous and you now have the power to make me explain what a slime video is in my thesis! This survey is part of my masters research, where I'm looking at how the accessibility of streamed Shakespeare productions has changed since lockdown and if there's anything we can do to make it better. I want to hear from as many people with as many different access needs as possible. Participants don't have to identify as disabled to take part, and there is space for carers to answer from their own perspective of helping others access these services. The survey isn't long, but it will take time because most of the questions are asking you to answer in your own words. There is an Easy Read English pathway for anyone who might find reading English difficult. If you have any other access requirements or would prefer to do the survey in another format, please email me and I will do everything I can to make sure you can take part. If you have any questions or would like to arrange other access requirements, email me at [email protected]
It took me about 45 minutes to fill out but I did get very side tracked looking for a particular recording of The Play That Goes Wrong on YouTube 🤔 If you could take the time to do the survey or share it would be a big help 🙂👍

Hi! This is a mixed media painting I made for my friends birthday! I really like how it came out :)
[ID: A mixed media painting of the sun and an asteroid belt in space. The sun is made from felt, has cartoonish rays and is shaded with orange. The felt is partially off the canvas. The background blackness of space is painted, while the asteroid belt as well as sparkles on the sun are visualized with glued on buttons of various sizes. There are also strings arranged in swirls near the sun. End ID]
