Three people were killed and nearly two dozen injured when an OC Transpo double-decker bus slammed into a bus shelter at Westboro station at the start of Friday afternoon rush hour.
I don’t live in Ottawa anymore. I moved this past spring. But I’m still shaken by this. I rode past this bus station on every trip I took downtown. This is along a major route, right at rush hour. There would have been government workers, students, all kinds of people, really, on that bus. Ottawa’s laid out in a way so that a lot of different types of people take public transit into the city centre. Buses are normally packed this time of day, as they whip down this very narrow transitway that sits below the main traffic. I don’t know what happened, whether it was ice or distracted driving, but that’s a spot in the transitway that has no room for error.
Even though I don’t live there anymore, I still can’t help but feel for Ottawa at this time. It’s a good city with good people. The thing everyone is most shocked about is just how sudden it happened. How a simple commute home turned into absolute horror. Stay strong, Ottawa. You’ll get through this.
