The more I think about it, the more it makes less sense. So Malenia was sent to kill Radahn but didn't actually succeed, yet she's still alive? Never went back to finish the job? They just let him wander around, becoming more and more feral and rotted for hundreds of years? Based on the fact that maybe a tarnished would one day kill him. The hell. The DLC implies that Miqulla is now a god by stepping through the gate but no new ending. Is the gate mandatory? What's that imply for Ranni and Tarnished taking over in the main game. He's ascended, and we don't actually kill him, nor is there an option to accept his offer to become consort with a new ending, so that means the dude's now stuck in consortless limbo? Or does he have to self split like Marika. It really feels like they didn't accurately stitch the two stories together. Like beating the game should have been mandatory, and the DLC should be you traveling either for yourself or with Ranni, or you choose to seek and support Miqulla to step through the gate to godhood. Really feels like the DLC was mostly an excuse to insert some cool remaining boss concepts, and the story flow was sacrificed for it.
I feel that too. Like, I'm even hearing people tell me that they found these "connections" through items and shit and I'm so confused like. It's clear they just didn't think this whole story through. NOTHING - and I mean NOTHING - in the game hinted at any of this. I feel like it really should have spent time working on explaining lore that was left out in the base game, maybe even scrapped storylines that meshed well with ideas we didn't get to see achieved in base game.
That's what I loved most about Elden Ring. It left concepts unexplored for us to explore on our own. Adding this to said concepts kind of negates the whole point of what they said when they said "leave it to interpretation". It was a cash grab. That's all it was. And it worked, it seems.
In previous souls games, items, descriptions of said items all implied something possible for a DLC. In DS1, we heard rumors of Artorias of the Abyss through Sif. So the DLC they put in that game really fit a lot of puzzle pieces together. Sif, Artorias and Manus all fit the base game's story smoothly, added new concepts, new areas and new spells that really felt like it flowed well together.
DS2 and 3 weren't as thoroughly explored, but they added bosses that still fit the base game in some way. And while a lot of Souls games do recycle boss designs and that is something we are used to in some way, it didn't feel overly obvious.
Example: Lorian's fight with the Demon Prince. Why does the Demon Prince make such a good boss? Because it WORKS and fits in some way in the lore. It's a challenging boss. It really does show that this is what Lorian struggled and won against. The challenge feels good and well thought out.
In this DLC for Elden Ring, without playing it thoroughly in detail, but watching?
These bosses don't feel like they connect very well to the game. They feel like scrapped concepts, designs and reskinned cutscenes. Specifically the one with Radahn that's the biggest fucking insult I've seen in a game in a long time.
And they had the audacity to ask for 40 dollars. For this trash.
