General Writeblr Survey:
How do you feel about titles for individual chapters?
Along the same thread, how do you feel about quotes or mini summaries that tease each chapter?
Like if you despise them and reblog if you prefer to see them in anything you read and invest in. Bonus points if you explain why. Thanks in advance!
Does anyone else have those days where they switch between all their WIPs like a squirrel on crack?
Because oh my goddddd. My brain is all over the place today and my adhd is in maximum overdrive. it’s like do all the things! write three words! change that characters name! rewrite the entire history of your medieval world! now switch to all the other wips in your arsenal and repeat! DO IT NOW!
*cries in adhd*
If you have a lot of WIPs and don’t know what to write next...
Do NOT do what I DO!!!!! I REPEAT DO NOT DO WHAT I DOOOOO!!!
Okay fam, so I do this thing where I ‘flash/speed’ watch the first episode of any random multiple new shows I’ve been wanting to check out on my watch list. Not only will you find new shows to watch and obsess over (and thus spend your time NOT writing new or old WIPs) you’ll suddenly find yourself with two or three new WIP ideas (thus adding to list of WIPs that you’re not writing... also, your old WIPs will just sit in your writing folder and just be like.... really bitch... it’s like that, huh?)
Learn from my mistakes. 😭
Ughhhh... I went back and looked at an old science fantasy WIP I started in 2015 and it gave me SOOOOOO many ideas that make me wanna change everything. *cries in adhd*
I seriously hate my adhd brain SO much because I could worldbuild for literally eternity and it would never be enough, lolololol. I keep tweaking and changing the genres and magic system of my modern fantasy WIP and It’s driving me insaneeeeeee!!! Send help for my indecisive writer brain!
Idk if I wanna go the full blown high fantasy magic route with mages, sorcerers, witches, and warlocks OR if I want to explore science fantasy route of my old WIP and instead of mages & witches, I’d have espers (essentially, people with psychokinetic abilities). My story is set in a modern setting and I want to mix science and magic either way but it really comes down to how much power I want my mages/espers to have... like do I want them to have the ability to use their magic/psychokinetic abilities teleport across the world instead of using trains or airplanes? Do I want (some) of them to have god-like magic or do I want them to have more practical, less showy magic that works with the man-made technology of their world? I really love the idea of magic technology or psychokinetic-powered machinery, too.
I also feel like I might be overthinking it because either way, espers and mages are somewhat similar in that they both have fantastic powers with just different names...
Ugh, I’m being bombarded by so many ideas (which is great) but with the way my brain works I have to explore every little thought until my WIP has a ‘perfect’ system. It’s so annoying.
I also don’t see as many novels that explore espers over mages, as using the magic/mage terminology is more popular. I like the idea of having a ridiculously small amount of the human population with these powers, whatever they may be. So, if the world population in my story is 4 billion, then there would only be about 20,000 mages/espers, which is less than 0.0005% of the population. Some could be incredibly powerful while others could have powers that are completely useless, hehehehe. So. Many. Ideassssss!!
What sounds more interesting, mages or espers? Or both??
I never heard science and fantasy in combination like you used it, even if sci fi is some sort of fantasy if you want to put it that way.
Tell me more about it. What isbthw name of the WIP? What is it about? How did you get the idea?
So, here is my dilemma with two of my wips: they're essentially the same story told in different settings. If you've followed any of my previous posts, you'll know that I really struggled with making decisions about whether I wanted my wip to be either modern fantasy (and more urban fantasy) vs. science fantasy (and having more science and magic technology).
The science fantasy genre is a fun and broad genre to write in. For examples, James Cameron's Avatar is an example of science fantasy but there are SO many different ways to write the genre. For my story, I struggled between deciding if I wanted to write out espers (magic users) and sentinels (superhuman soldiers) in a modern science fantasy setting with only humans, superhumans, and demons as a humanoid race. For my modern fantasy wip, I wanted to create mages, hunters, werewolves, vampires, etc. Both stories have a strong demon hunting, saving the world kind of theme. I feel like its basically the same except I just need to decide on a damn genre to write the story in, LOL. I just hate how indecisive I am.
Do any other writers have trouble creating singular stories not related to any of their worldbuilding?
What I mean by that is that I struggle with making a story not related to any of the worlds I’ve built. Maybe it’s just because I’m SO into worldbuilding and I spend so much effort into the settings I create that I need to have multiple stories created for one setting? I struggle with creating a ‘stand alone’ kind of novel.
For example, I have three main WIPs right all, all fantasy (one medieval fantasy, one modern fantasy, one science fantasy), each one centered around three giant worlds I’ve built. Those WIPs are also all series, too. So multiple stories in one series.
Kinda like how authors like George R. R. Martin and J.K. Rowling (don’t judge me, just picking very famous authors that everyone knows that have HUGE worlds) have these gargantuan settings and a lot of different characters and don’t really deviate from those worlds.
Is anyone else like this or am I just a weirdo with big attachments to the worlds I build? 🥺😭
Why am I like this? 😭
