Why do you write? What are you trying to achieve on your writing journey?

I'm writing because I dream of getting a professional job as a published author.

Writing is a hobby of mine but I don't care either way if I get published.

I use writing for therapeutic reasons, like keeping a log or daily journaling.

Writing is my biggest passion in life but I don't want to get published.

Other (please feel free to add your own reasons bc I'd love to hear them).

What are people's opinions on capitalization for words specific to a work of fiction? Ex: We use the word "knack" to refer to supernatural powers instead of "power" or "gift."

Writeblr Questions

@writeblrsupport shared some questions today with a holiday greeting and I do love questions! Here's their post

How many wips have you worked on this year?

Too many. Six seriously, the rest have just been ideas.

How many wips have you completed?

None. Embarassing. I should have at least one finished but I don't.

Are you proud? ( you should be!)

Nope. No reason to be. Didn't even get a draft made for NaNo and just wrote fanfic. Still not a single wip completed.

What are your plans for the new year/2023 in general?

That depends on if I have a home then or not. I don't now, and it makes it difficult to plan for writing when I don't even have a wardrobe to put my clothes in. While I do wish to write and finish my mermaid wip because I believe it's such a cool idea, I don't know if I'll have the peace to write.

I do still write but it's only fanfic because I don't have all my notes for the original stuff since someone took my laptop and I don't like when my notes are in many places. I'd really like to get things in order and write that mermaid pirates wip though.

What can this blog do to help you more?

I know I said I'd be more active, you know, like a liar, but I've had some personal stuff come up, mainly my Mom being in the hospital over Christmas and me staying with her and her not being 100% better after getting home.

But!

I'm setting up my queue for my 100+ reblogs in my drafts tonight so my blog will be active even if I'm not.

In other news, my creative writing group is collabing on a story set in Tudor Era England so if you got any resources on writing characters in that time period, it would be much appreciated if you could send them my way.

What makes Urban Fantasy?

@bardicfool posted this to my bingo board, and I brought it over here to a new post so we can all talk with my seeing my bingo board over and over again :P

Such a good question! My first experience with urban fantasy was things like Holly Black's faery tales, or Melissa Marr's. Stories where magic can and does happen between the steam and steel of cities, where humans think they're safest.

But I've definitely expanded the term far beyond what I think it's natural borders are, at least when trying to tell people about what sort of books I love. That and "paranormal romance" are my two go tos for "what do you read?" questions, but neither accurately defines my interests. They're just what I'm going to ask for when I go into a bookstore and get lost, more or less.

So let's chat guys. What makes urban fantasy a genre? What are some adjacent genres that would cover things that aren't a catchall term like "new adult fiction" (which I love is a thing btw but like that's SUCH a broad strokes term). Do we call it magical realism, even when the magic becomes more than a little unreal? Do we call it contemporary fiction, even though that barely narrows it down anymore than New Adult does?

I'll admit this isnt a topic I'm well researched in. I'd love to hear what other think too.

Question to fellow writeblrs: How does one speak of their work and try to promote it without giving out major spoilers? 

There are so many things about all of my books that I want to talk about, but the vast majority of it is incredibly spoiler-heavy. I don’t want to ruin the ending before one even gets to read the books first!
