don't leave
"Don't leave." he repeated firmly, his voice unwavering. "Not like this. At least wait until morning." She looked up at him again, her eyes meeting his and finding the pain in his facial features and she realized he was right. She'd never be able to live with herself knowing she'd slunk off in the middle of the night, ashamed. She gave in. Closed the door. Let the bag drop off her shoulders onto the tile. He smiled weakly, ever so slightly, and she looked away. "You take the bed. I'll sleep on the couch." he said quietly, walking away from the bedroom door and out into the living room. She didn't watch him, but she caught a wisp of his scent on the air as he passed. He'd always smelled the same. Warm and musky and safe. Then, waking up and smelling like him every day had been comforting. Now, it was like a slap in the face. She shook her head as she walked toward the bedroom, squeezing her eyes shut, and closed the door behind her. As expected, she got little sleep that night.
undeniably
"Dan? Daniel!" Someone was shaking him, screaming... he longed for quiet and peace. He groaned, trying to shake them off and squeezing his eyes shut tighter as wave after wave of pain washed over him.
And then he woke with a jolt and a scream. The pain quickly subsided all at once, like he'd rammed straight into a brick wall. His eyes were still shut, and he rocked back and forth slowly, breathing heavily through his teeth, trying... trying not to cry... again. Evidently, he failed and let the tears come, let them run down his cheeks as he quivered in shock, sobbing and reliving the dream over in his mind.
And all at once, warm, soft arms drew around him, pulling him close. This wasn't the first time she had comforted him, oh no. This had been going on for months, and the funny, wonderful thing was that she never got tired of rocking his sobs away. Not once. "I-I'm sorry." he said through a thick layer of tears and a choked-up throat. He clung to her desperately, despite what he'd just said, and she clung to him, silently comforting him and easing the harshness of the nightmare away.
"Don't ever let me hear you say that again, Dan Howell." she whispered, her mouth right next to his ear. He almost smiled, and buried his head in her neck.
"You must be getting so tired of this." he said thickly. "Every goddamn night." he roughly ran the back of his hand over one of his eyes. She didn't seem to mind much. By now she was used to the sight of his tears. He imagined it'd shaken her up the first few times, but now it was a regular occurrence.
"Shut up, okay?" she sighed, kissing his forehead as gently as she could. Dan bit his lip, his eyes flickering away from her.
"It's been months. When is this gonna stop?" he squeezed his eyes shut tight, gulping.
She said nothing, because she didn't know and she couldn't bear to tell him those words. Instead, she pulled him in a little tighter, wiped a tear from his eye with her thumb.
"You're still on this earth for a reason, Dan." she whispered, kissing his cheek lightly, softly. Dan blinked open his eyes and looked at her. "If you weren't meant to stay here, they wouldn't have kept you alive, okay?" her voice shook just a bit. "You can get through it, I promise. No one said it'd be easy, but still. You have a job to do here, okay?" she lifted his chin, smiling the most that she could. His arms tightened around her waist briefly..
And at any other time it would've sounded cliche, preachy, sappy even. Especially coming out of her mouth. Her mouth that never really spoke anything whimsical, any long speeches of hope. But now he couldn't help but feel what she'd just said was absolutely, undeniably perfect. "God, I love you." And at that, she smiled just a little bit more.
