Almost 600 people of color have been killed by police in California just in the last 5 years. On July 1, people who have been impacted by police violence--family members, formerly incarcerated, community members--will encircle the California Capitol building and hold up the names of those killed by police. Click the Ticket button on this page to receive event updates or to volunteer to hold up a name of the fallen. We call on state legislators to: --Defund the $31B police and prison industrial complex --Hold police who kill accountable --Prevent police unions from donating to district attorneys and judges --Dismantle the machinery of systemic racism (restore voting rights, Ban the Box, etc.) --Distance the state from vestiges of slavery by removing Involuntary Servitude from our State Constitution --Establish an independent community oversight board with subpoena power to investigate police violence Join All of Us or None, CA legislators, and victims of police violence to honor those killed by the police and to press forward with vital change. We will also be registering people to vote, as well as providing information about campaigns to pass ACA 6 to restore voting rights, and to remove slavery / indentured servitude from the California constitution. California has a deadly problem with policing. California police kill more people than any other state, and there are enormous racial disparities. That's why we are working to pass AB 392, a bill in the CA Legislature to stop police from using deadly force when they have other options. By holding police to a higher standard, this common-sense change to the law will make the difference between life and death. Too many families are left shattered by police violence. Many of these killings are senseless and preventable. Police should never use deadly force unless absolutely necessary. But right now, California law lets police kill even if deadly force isn't required. We must hold police accountable. Last year, this bill was stalled in the legislature by the big law enforcement lobby. It's time we take the power back and demand more from police and our elected representatives. Join the movement of everyday individuals who are committed to bring an end to this death toll. Get informed, get organized and let's jump into action. @aclu_socal @aclu_norcal @aclu_nationwide #JusticeforFranciscoSerna (at Anaheim, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/BxDkmn2A0d0/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=vcveh05ybdo

My sincerest Thanks to everyone for their support of my family since my father’s murder at the hands of police. I have been involved with local families, advocates & activist throughout California and across the US to make changes to the injustices that we’ve experienced. CA passed a landmark bill which went into law on January 1, 2019 - #SB1421 The Right to Know Act (transparency law) however CA police unions are fighting to shut it down now. @kamalaharris @kamalaforamerica you called for investigation into Kern County Law Enforcement agencies but there has been zero accountability I ask that you do more nationally to prevent continuous murders as you run for Presidential office police violence is an epidemic nationwide!! @agbecerra @gavinnewsom it is imperative that you do something now as I plead for change locally and throughout CA #JusticeForFranciscoSerna #JusticeForKernCounty @conmijente @latinojustice @youthjusticela @aclu_nationwide @aclu_socal @aclu_norcal (at Bakersfield, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/BtRL17EAR7x/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1dv0lajouw19h
