I told myself I wouldn't do this but this shit needs to be said. I'm still angry over what happened with K'Andre and even though the Rangers and the NHL condemned the actions, I'm still mad. It's still not enough. As a hispanic, it angers me because I deal with microaggressions and racial prejudice on the regular. Granted, because I am light-skinned I don't get it as bad as others (like my little sister who is dark-skinned) Only poc will ever see what it's like to have to work twice as hard to achieve the same things and get the same recognition as white people. My whole life I've had to deal with backhand compliments ("you're really well-spoken for a spanish girl" and "you're really smart for a spanish girl). I've had people give me dirty looks and walk away from me everytime I speak in spanish in public like as if I'm a danger to society. I've had people call me a hick or spick or any other term given to Hispanics. I've always had to work harder to get recognized in anything I ever did because of my racial background. It's bullshit. White people need to put themselves in our shoes. You wouldn't like it if we called y'all crackers or any other fucked up term for a white person, so why would you throw a racial slur at us? The thing that irritates me the most is how normal it is for poc to deal with this shit. We always have to be the bigger person. We always have to be silent in our suffering. It's bullshit. We shouldn't feel the need to be silent in what we deal with. I'm not expecting sympathy or for white people to relate to this. All I ask for is empathy. In times like this, we could all use some love and compassion. If you're white and struggle to understand what poc, especially those of african ancestry, I recommend you watch this video. This will put into perspective what we have to deal with. Again, all I ask for is empathy
