Hi! I'm a fan of your recently viral fish quilt post and I just wanted to ask, do you do the quilting part by hand or by machine? Or send it out sometimes? If you do machine, do you ever use a big quilter, or does your sewing machine manage?
Hello! I only machine quilt, because hand sewing is just. so very much not a skillset I have. So far, I have done all machine quilting myself on my various projects, and I am doing it all on a regular-sized machine (albeit one that has some fancy decorative stitch options.)
Not gonna lie, the actual quilting part of making quilts is my least favorite bit, and if I weren’t so hilariously buried in debt I would at least consider sending off my stuff to one of the extremely gifted longarm quilters in my area (I live in the same zip code as Actual Famous Free Motion Quilter Angela Walters), BUT.
If I had that extra $100-$300 per project just lying around I probably wouldn’t have gotten into quilting in the first place, ‘cause I’d have been able to just BUY something awesome for my friend.
It’s too late now, I seem to be in it for the long haul, because quilting is a form of artistic expression that is shockingly forgiving of fuckups.
I’ll revisit the idea of subcontracting the quilting part if I ever suddenly fall into a couple hundred thousand dollars and no longer have to worry about student loans or medical debt.
