Here we have two reasons why if you’re talking to someone and they play the “x age = sell” card, then that someone doesn’t know shit about football.

(More below).

I’ll explain with a case that hits closer to (my) “home”.

Recently Juventus renewed Martina Rosucci’s contract until 2027. She is 33. Comments are filled up with fans, and it’s Italian fans which is even worse, complaining about the decision and encouraging the club to “sell the hag” or “kick out these grandmas” to make space for younger players or international big names (like one Lia Wälti who doesn’t give a shit about the club). They think that this is the way to snap Juventus out of the absolutely horrible funk they got themselves in recently. Younger blood breeds glory and wins. Old grandmas hold it back. There’s a problem. Juventus just missed their first penalty in ages since Girelli left. They concede goals after goals. This is a team that while still being incredibly dominant in Serie A, is slowly going adrift. There’s no passion. They lose games before games even start. They’re still. Incapable of reacting. They’re getting run over. Why.

Fans want loyalty and love for the badge. They want passion. Wälti won’t give them that. And younger players with no guidances won’t either. Young cubs left alone get eaten and old dogs by themselves can’t clearly carry the whole load. The hybrid between these two is the only creature that thrives. Barça understands that, no matter how much it drives the “wokest” fans mad. Passion and love for the colors, history of the club, intent, these are all values that get passed on only if you give players the chance to move on together. And you do that by welcoming back all the Girelli (if so happens) and by renewing all the Rosucci and all the Bonansea (to name another one) you have.

30+ players are gold. Put some fucking respect on their names and careers.
