(from footnotes) Ar-Rahman (adjectival) and ar-Raheem (verbal) are two names for Allah derived from ‘mercy’ (the latter of which, raheem, may be used to describe a person, but the former is reserved strictly for Allah).  I used to know a man called Rahim when I was little and every year we went to this place, I used to look out for him but until one time he just wasn’t there and I didn’t see him again.

Good and evil will be rewarded or punished accordingly 1:5

There are 14 opening letters which occur at the beginning of 29 surahs in the Qur’an (muqatta’at)

People disbelieve whether you warn them or not 2:6.  This particular message was an almost exact echo of the words I once said to a friend (also see (5) below).  Words of another person that say “Believe!” and the words of yourself that lie and say “I believe!” are nothing if you don’t believe.  I said to my friend, “Even if I lied right now and said that I believe in a higher power, that higher power would know that I’m lying and I can’t be a liar”.

If you lie and say that you believe, you will be punished 2:8-10, 2:18

Creation 2:22-38, 2:164

Turning away from Islam would be the worst thing 2:27

Iblees is Satan 2:34

Those who disbelieve will go to the Fire 2:39, 2:81

Only believing in what you see is wrong 2:55.  This was an especially important part for me to read because it captures the meaning of faith.

Be good to your parents 2:83

Do not kill each other or evict each other from your homes 2:84

Most of what had the biggest impact on me in this chapter was discussed in my “Introduction” post, so I won’t write any more than my notes for this one.  Tomorrow there should be more to say about Juz 2.

Points to mention

Important: These notes are meant to be just that - brief notes.  Some I’ve made to remind me of important lessons so that I can refer back to them, some I’ve made purely so that I can look back at when a particular idea was introduced, and some I’ve made for the simple reason that I read something that resonated with me. Apologies for the lack of accents on Arabic words etc. in the notes and if you feel that I’ve misunderstood or misinterpreted something, please send me a message and teach me.  Hopefully further and repeated reading will help my understanding but I would welcome the advice.  I know that these notes are simplistic and probably seem like superficial things to take from it but for now, they’re helping me to focus and the point of this is to learn. I have friends who say they learn something new every time they read the Quran so for now, have patience.
