He was dead. Ratchet knew that much before he so much as opened his eyes. The last thing he remembered was a sharp pain in the back of his head after hearing the heavy footsteps of an intruder.
Slowly opening his eyes, Ratchet found that being dead was nothing like he’d expected. There was no void, nor were there fluffy clouds all around with pearly gates before him. No, what he saw above him were stars. Countless stars, and a vast universe stretched out before him, like the clearest night he’d ever seen. It was breathtakingly beautiful.
The chicken started to get to his feet, finding the task far easier than it would have been on Earth. He almost floated up when he pushed off the ground, and that caught him by surprise. Perhaps even more shocking, however, was the fact he left no imprint on the ground beneath him. Ratchet blinked and began to take in more of his surroundings. Were he simply floating in a starry universe, he might have still believed it to be some sort of afterlife-- but no. The rocky, almost barren terrain around him led him to believe this was something else. His suspicions were soon confirmed when he looked toward the horizon.
In plain view-- there it was. The Earth. It had to be. It looked much like any globe he’d seen manufactured-- at least when it came to the basic shapes of the continents. He could see the blue oceans, the white clouds swirling in the atmosphere, and the various colors of the lands. His home. Or, he supposed it had been.
“Magnificent...” He murmured, continuing to stare out into the eternal night. The wonder of the cosmos was the one thing keeping that bittersweet pang in his chest from turning fully bitter. Ratchet didn’t even realize that he was being watched. That anyone could even see him.
