Review: Jzzy’s newest single ‘After Effects’ showcases a flair of pop-punk amongst angsty lyricism that tears apart a toxic ex
Indian American singer-songwriter Jzzy may only be twenty, but when she realised her passion for music early on in high school she began her musical journey from a young age with an array of covers on her Instagram and Youtube channel. Honing in on her talents through a school of performing arts in Mumbai, Jzzy got the push she needed to begin releasing her own original songs in August of 2020 - and it’s only been an upward journey since then. From her feature in Rolling Stone Indie with her second single ‘Just A Glimpse’, to her growth now with her sixth single ‘After Effects’, Jzzy is here to prove that she’s a pop star in the making and not one you want to miss out on.
Taking a bold step into new musical territory, Jzzy’s new single ‘After Effects’ explores a more unapologetically pop-punk sound - and it’s clear from the very start that she’s mastered one hell of an experience within it. Immediately leading with a strong electric guitar riff, the distinct tone of ‘After Effects’ is established as the invigorating instrumental scene builds for quite the adrenaline-pumping journey. Throwing an electronic trap-esque beat into the mix for the main duration of the track, paired with that of a rising and falling real drum beat every so often for the more intense moments of the release, Jzzy sure knows how to build up a cinematic tension for the brazen rush of every chorus and the immensely growing bridge. Thundering bass guitar seeps into the undertones, subtle but intensely lying at the heart of the release and its striking sound. Topping off these three minutes of pure head-banging, heart-racing bliss, Jzzy’s vocals absolutely radiate every ounce of angst and assertiveness you’d expect from someone no longer prepared to hide away or prepared to let anyone think they’ve gotten the better of her, and it makes it all the more of a treat to listen to. Confidently belting her lines, Jzzy brings the final touches of boldness to a single that we can only imagine will shine best in a packed out crowd passionately singing along to every word.
With an unfiltered lyrical journey, ‘After Effects’ seems to explore the difficulties of finding yourself still garnering resentment and pain from a breakup with an ex lover that you haven’t been with for years but cannot seem to forget. Evidently this relationship was not just a mere bump in the road for Jzzy, as she pours out all her unshared thoughts and feelings for some of the most raw lines in ‘After Effects’, even from the opening moments that reflect on how ‘It’s been years and I’m still out of love…’ Bundled with an array of angry, but ever-so “over it” word-play, ‘After Effects’ doesn’t hold back in ripping this ex, and their awful actions, to shreds and Jzzy makes sure to do it in a way that can both relate to listeners and still withhold her own dignity: ‘I wonder who hurt you in the past, for you to hurt me like that?’ Opening up about how much this person broke her apart, Jzzy delves into the after effects of such a rocky relationship filled with constant hurt; the enjoyment of dragging her down; frequent lies and just an abundance of toxicity - and yet through it all, Jzzy manages to write a chorus that focuses on letting go and encouraging her audience to do the same. With the anthemic chorus lines, ‘I’m ready to forgive but I’ll never forget… wish you well but out of my sight’ promoting the ability to forgive those who have wronged you and allowing it to free you from their hold, ‘After Effects’ proves to be a cathartic experience of high-energy angst that’s determined to still help you let go and get you in a better place than before you started listening.
To enjoy the head-banging experience that is ‘After Effects’ , with a side of poignant lyricism to encourage just an edge of heart-ache, you can give a listen to Jzzy’s new single for yourself here!
