Bristol is a large city in the South West of England and about 3500 miles from New York and the birth place of hip-hop but its closer than you think.

The city has a reputation for producing innovative music due to its strong cultural mix. Best known for the invention of trip-hop – Massive Attack, Tricky. Portishead et al – Bristol has a very strong underground hip-hop scene that is just beginning to bubble to surface across the UK.

Leading the charge is the monthly Straight Outta Bristol (SOB) nights, run by James Farrell and held at one of the city’s better music venues, the Golden Lion.

Whilst SOB nights, and there have been six so far, provide the full range of the Bristol underground scene, the city’s top hip-hop acts have all made their presence felt.

The first SOB night of 2013 was all about hip-hop and featured headliner K*NERS, a MC trumpeted by BBC Radio One Extra, Lowdose, whose influences include 2Pac, Bob Marley and Michael Jackson, Thelonius, an urban/jazz band who have been featured on the BBC6 Gilles Peterson show, and Catraz, a local producer and MC who has the ear of BBC Radio One’s Steve Lamacq.
