Girardi not up to challenging umpires’ call on disputed Butler homer

Manager Joe Girardi missed his opportunity — if his team had one at all — to reverse an umpires' call that might have cost the New York Yankees a victory against the Kansas City Royals.

Umpires ruled on the field, and confirmed via video, that K.C.'s Billy Butler(notes) "clearly" hit a solo home run in the third inning Thursday night of the Royals 5-4 victory. TV replays, however, showed the ball not clearing the fence in left-center field at Kauffman Stadium.

Even peace-loving Mariano Rivera got enraged and said it wasn't a home run (video of Rivera's reaction), and he's the most honest man in the ballpark!

Not that official protests usually lead to satisfaction, but if the Yankees wanted to get the major league office to reverse the umps' ruling, Girardi needed to file immediately after the game. He didn't, saying via MLB.com that he believed the word of the crew chief, Dana DeMuth.

"He said it's clearly a home run," Girardi said of DeMuth. "Maybe I erred. I believed the umpire."
