‘perfume’ a single kami herself didn’t expect to have but she felt inspired and the concept was born. all about luring people in and using them to make an even more alluring sent, inspired by posion ivy in some points, with the song being one of her more sensual tracks and giving off a slightly off-kilter vibe.
kami sing-songed as boa moved out of the way so she could take a seat. now that she had the lyrics for the song (now titled perfume) and kami was eager to work on the music. she had heard what boa had worked on and she wanted to make a few tweaks and changes. she had no idea where the song would go but if no one took it up, then Kami would be happy to be the singer for it.
either way, she had an idea and boa was the type to sick back and let her work.
the first thing kami did, was change up the intro. for now, it was a nice long instrumental opening but wanted it to be a bit more off-kilter. she wanted the opening to be slightly scary before it hit you with the retro vibes. so, just for a moment, the listened wondered were the song would go. there was just a slight creepy factor to it but kami loved it. ( and some point, she already thought of it as her song, she wasn't sure when it would come out but it was hers. ) the rest of the verse, she didn't touch what boa already had, her mind focused on building more now. there was a slight section, where she thought it'd work for the pre-chorus, toning down the music a little more to give it a mystical feeling before the chorus came and in kicked it back up.
the lead into the second verse had been changed just a little for her. just letting the drums bring it in before all of the sounds came together. and then she had to cut the verse down a little, the intro had been extended and she had to take the time out somewhere. the bridge had been her own work. in some ways, she had taken inspiration from the pre-chorus, taking away most of the songs so the vocals would be the focus. just having a bit of the beat running under it and keeping it slightly muted. there wasn't anything too fancy in the song, the concept and the music, kami wanted it to be in your face. it was a retro track and she knew it, her changes were just subtle enough to fit with the mood of the lyrics.
slowly, as the chorus came to an end, she amped it up. leaving just a second of silence where she knew a line could fit in. just so it could be soft climax to the build up. from there, it was a copy and paste for the ending, extending the instrumental outro but she didn't do a fade out, just straight up cutting it off at the end. once she was finished, she turned to face boa with a grin and the woman gave her thumbs up.
that was going to be the concept of this song. she wasn't sure what came over her but she thought it would be perfect for what boa was doing with the track she heard, the woman still needed lyrics and kami had the chance to listen to the demo track boa had managed to put together.
and it was safe to say she felt a bit inspired.
a scent.
that was the starting base for her. she wanted the lyrics to focus on something that would linger. a way to draw someone in and already, kami had an entire concept laid out in her head. honestly, she wasn't sure when she would sing the song or if she would sing it at all but she did have an idea to sell boa.
she wanted the lyrics to be teasing and stand-offish at the same time. she wasn't leading anyone but she knew she was attractive and more importantly, she knew they knew she was attractive and the cool confidence was the draw. at the same time, she never promised anything. live in the moment for that moment and never expect more.
and she was the one to choose the setting.
the line had been a flow of adjectives, small labels for herself. but it was after this that kami tried to focus more on the scent theme in the lyrics. like her scent, something that was hard to ignore and drew people in. it could even be a trap but that didn't matter in the moment, all that mattered had been that they wanted her. it was full of self-confidence but that wasn't something kami was going to shy away from when it came to her or her music. compared to some of her other work, the lyrics in here were far tamer than some might have expected.
it walked the line and she was fine with it.
for now, she skipped focusing on a chorus, wanting to see where the rest of the lyrics took her. she could re-work and re-plan.
a quick line was written down and circled as she moved on. it was something she was going to play around with, what she had in mind didn't work. the next verse was short and sweet, more bragging but in a sensual manner. just to reinforce that she wasn't the prey in the song, she was the mastermind pulling the strings. it helped her move along to the bridge, something had already worked out and now she wanted to give it down. the moment with her would be fleeting, focus on the today and don't worry about tomorrow. it was bold and a claim but it worked well within the frame-work of her lyrics and that was all that really mattered in the end.
now her focus turned back to the chorus and there it was slightly darker. if the verses were about luring in, the chorus was about what happened. she chose to be a little more direct in the wording. there was more playing around with it, how she wanted to say it and what she wanted to highlight that part. in fact, it needed to be highlighted. once it was finished, kami found herself going back to the one throw away line she had thought of it and slipped it in, right before the chorus and giving a slightly different one that would go into the last chorus. now that the base was down, she allowed herself to focus on editing. going over everything again with fresh eyes to see if anything could be improved on.
and as always, she found something. making changes until she had to force herself to stop and be happy with the final product. she couldn't wait to bring it boa and see how it sounded with the music behind it.
