12/12/2021| Painting and Glazing Workshop

I continued work on perfecting my statue by going to the painting and glazing workshop. My piece originally broke in the kiln so it had been semi shattered for weeks now, I thought now would be a great time to give it some retribution.

The most important part of making this piece was that the glazing on the insides was really shiny as it would make the blood and gross guts feel lifelike. In person this fact really stands out, especially with the black paint with the red as it really gives it a level of depth.

I noted the shape slightly melted in the kiln i think because parts such as the brain and the spine are slumping out of their body, which i think only adds to the gross feel of it all.

Overall I had a good time in this workshop and was great for anyone who wanted to do some more things to their clay pieces to bring it to another level. I might not do it again because I'm not completely engrossed in claywork however the ending product was something that showed me what great things you can get from claywork

There is very little known about the funny little artistic entity known as Plastiboo.

Representing themself as an enigmatic blue cat, Plastiboo creates horror inspired pieces depicting topics such as mental illness, nostalgia, and biology, with an air of playfulness hovering above the filth.

I admire Plastiboo for their uses of several different mediums to express the topics they cover. Often ranging from 3D modelling to depict clay like characters, utalizing old cds to create new cover art, digital art, animations, and much much more.

They interest me when covering the topic of play because of their pieces ability to twist concepts that may seem a bit same old-same old, into all new creations entirely through their ability to have fun on top of the dark themes. Putting a cartoon cat into a horrifying scene of petruding electric poles or replacing a CD cover with your own art shows a level of play that i want to integrate into my own project.

My Projects idea was inspired by this artists concepts. Ive tried to twist the basis of chess on its head to bring out a different, perhaps darker take on if chess was the basis of war and monarchy. So as such, Plastiboo's art taking concepts like video games and friendliness and turning it twisted is exactly the kind of inspiration id need to bring to life an alternative take on Chess.

In summery, Plastiboo is an incredible conceptual talent and never fails to invigerate me to spill out of my comfort zone and take alternate routes to achieve a pieces potential. Soon I hope to capture a spark akin to the dark playfullness in their work.

Immaterial girl

No study of the transgender experience would be complete without citing an important figure in my personal growth and that person would be Sophie.

I remember the excitement I felt in school in 2018 seeing Sophie being nominated for a grammy award and really deserving it. Seeing someone in my position excell in a medium I adore had me cheering. Being a fan of her for a very long time and it recently being the 1 year anniversary of her passing, I found it no better time than ever to celebrate her through art.

The process, taking roughly 2 hours~

01|05|22| Project Statement

This semester was dedicated to learning some basic foundational animation work and I enjoyed every bit of it.

I've been having a lovely time these last 5 weeks. From getting to know new people to team building activities and to Fota island, I think there was at something for everybody this semester.

My favourite project to have worked on this semester mustve been the animated poster. There was something about the process of finding a poster and brainstorming ideas then leading to the puzzle filled activity of actually bringing the piece to life, that really instilled a confidence of what I can actually achieve in the medium with enough patience.

I'd pick a least favorite but it wouldnt do justice to how much fun I had in the several areas we worked in, everything had something to like.

I know next year wont be as "easy" but I'm really hoping I can keep up the confidence and enjoyment I carried throughout this semester into the future.

Inio Asano is a writer and manga artist originating from Ishioka, Japan. He is primarily known for his critically acclaimed work on the series Goodnight Punpun/ Oyasumi Punpun.

His work integrates several techniques that ive found extremly fascinating. Similar to myself, he integrates fictional characters onto real photographs. This gives a real world connection to these characters through beautiful execution.

His approach is different in how he chooses to trace photographs and use the result to place the characters onto, though you would hardly know they were traces considering his immese talent at capturing light and perspective. His character designs minus punpun are extremly realistic, though they have the classic anime flair in facial features.

The main character in the manga, Punpun, is human. Though he is personfied in many forms throughout the series, most prominantly as a bird.

As his state changes mentally, he physcially changes to the viewer and you never see him as human.

This ranges from bird at his most standard, to a tetrahedron when punpun was doing the minimum amount of effort to be considered human, just existing, even to taking over the appearance of someone else but with a bird head; representing a time when he pretends to be his neighbour in order to function socially.

These manifestations of appearance coincide with how I've explored growth in the transgender experience. Appearance is fluid and subject to interpretation in many instances, and I believe this work of Inio Asano closely relates to the dark and twisted manifestations the self can be reflected.

I wanted to animate a gun shot and it grew to including a character because I remembered a previous piece I had done involving a woman and gun and thought to bring it full circle

The original piece represented killing your old self constantly to keep progressing.
