Hi! Not sure if this has been asked before, but how do you come up with names? For example, how did you come up with Chism, or Vintra? I'm currently writing something that takes place in a made-up place and I have no idea where to start for the name. Any tips? Thank you so much for your time!

Hi, there! Hm, a lot of different ways? A lot of the time I lean on Latin/Greek roots for creating fake names. For Chism, though, I based each of the seasonal gods off the Norwegian words for the seasons. Winter (Vinter) = Vintra, Summer (Sommer) = Sumar, Autumn (Høst) = Hostia, Spring (Vår) = Vari. Chism is actually based off the word Schism, due to the breaking point/divide of the country throughout the story. 

Many fantasy writers do something similar, if you look at their work! I tend to gravitate towards Latin, since the suffixes are so ubiquitous. The beauty of creating your own world, though, is that it doesn’t have to follow the rules of anyone else. If you want to call a character Cthuil, you can and there doesn’t have to be any particular logic to it. Good luck with your writing!

Hey! I'm curious, seeing as you're more of a planner, what are your thoughts on pantsers? Not in a judgmental or criticizing way, but just how do you see them? Like, is it hard to wrap your head around their strategies, etc.? (Just thought it was an interesting question to see the views of a planner on pantsers or vice versa). Hope you have a good day/night!

Hello! Well, do people who fly by the seat of their pants (I assume that’s what you mean by pantsers lol) have strategy? LOL kidding, kidding… kind of. But idk, it’s all just a matter of preference. For me, I can’t work without organization. I forget things, I go off on tangents and find it absolutely impossible to keep track of everything I want to say without clear notes and/or an outline. Not everyone is like this, though; I commend anyone who is able to write without that level of structure. Indeed, there are many famous writers (Neil Gaiman, one of my favorites, comes to mind) who never plan beyond the first chapter. They just kind of write, see where it goes and fix continuity mistakes in editing. I know many see planning as somewhat childish, like training wheels to help a novice writer get on their feet.

I don’t see planning that way, I just see all of the above as different methods to achieve the same goal. Do whatever feels right for yourself and try not to worry too much about what methods do/don’t work for others.
