Breathtaking: K2 - The World's Most Savage Mountain is now showing at @mtnfilm . The movie documents @adrianballinger and @carla.perez.ec climb of K2, the world's second tallest peak. They were supported by @estebantopomena @namgye @pembageljesherpa @akbar_syed_lela_peak and a team of porters. I was on assignment for @eddiebauer, focusing on still images but really happy about the footage I was able to capture as well. Even happier to see a great movie made using much of the footage . My assignment brought me as far as K2 base camp, where I spent 5 days and then trekked out 65 kilometers while the team climbed. Congratulations @carla.perez.ec for becoming the first women to successfully summit Everest and K2 in one year, and the first women from the Americas to summit Everest and #K2 without supplemental oxygen. She's also summited Everest another time with O2, Cho Oyu, Manaslu, Aconcagua (s. face), Pobeta (AKA Jengish Chokusu, northern most 7k meter peak) and other notable ascents without supplemental O2. Most importantly, beyond all achievements, she's a great person. Carla was the expedition leader for team #k2noo2 , always professional, kind, compassionate, considerate and willing to do/go extra for the expedition and the team. Carla, along with her partner @estebantopomena, has dedicated her life to the mountains and I look forward to seeing where life takes them. Thanks for the inspiration 🙏. The #k2noo2 team of @carla.perez.ec @adrianballinger @estebantopomena @namgye and @pembageljesherpa began up the #abruzziridge route of #k2. We started early, but it was an exceptionally hot day. Almost halfway to camp one, a team of climbers kicked off a wet slide, just below camp one, which the two climbers were sliding and tumbling in. They stated they were "qualified guides." The wet slide hit part of the boot pack and ran to the bottom of the snow (reference last photo). The team retreated. The two climbers descended unharmed and said they were "perfect" and that they often use that technique to descend. We noted they should be more careful with other climbers on route below, but they firmly believed the wet slide didn't come near the route and one climber affirmed he had "thirty years of mountaineering experience." I can confirm, with photos, the side ran over part of the boot pack and fixed lines. In the end, it was relatively uneventful, but I fear for my friends and other climbers on the mountain with this kind of thinking and climbing etiquette. This season, the number of climbers on the mountain are unprecedented. As climbers get higher, inevitably, decision making will be more important and ultimately suffer due to altitude. Rest day for the porters allowed us to relax and break bread with the Balti people in #paju camp. The Balti people are kind, most welcoming people and genuinely curious in all the international travelers to the region.
