Hello! I found your breakdown on gambling and addiction fascinating and was wondering if you could clear something up for me. Both me and my dad have had addictions (him with smoking, me with caffeine, both of us switched to soda, then quit) that we managed to quit "cold turkey" very easily. I'm very prone to mental illness and still managed it. Is there a psychological or scientific reason for that? Is "addictive personality" and "not easily addicted" an actual scientific thing? Thank you!
‘Cold Turkey’ is almost always because you’re not ‘quitting’ addiction, you’re switching your addiction to something else. Something else that gives you that dopamine rush. For example, people might quit smoking and eat more for that dopamine rush (it’s very common for people to put on weight when they quit smoking). Or quit alcohol for cigarettes. Or quit smoking for soda or coffee, for example.
It’s very, very rare for someone to just quit self-medicating (which is what addiction is) truly ‘cold turkey’. If you did, you would be angry, moody, irritable, teary - something like that. You would have a surge of the emotions/illness you’re trying to medicate. Most people are unable to tolerate this without professional support like you get in in-patient rehab clinics. Most people substitute an addiction to something they consider less harmful instead, but call it ‘cold turkey’ because they quit the initial substance/behaviour straight away.
I love your i'morko fic! Since Magnus canonically speaks Elvish, would you say he forced himself to learn so he could finally be in on the twins' secrets? Like, imagine Lup and Taako are talking to each other in Elvish and then Magnus just comes up and responds in Elvish too and they just stop and stare at him in shock
He probably asks them to teach him, and they agree because at this point Magnus has become like a dorky younger brother to them. Suddenly the secret elvish gossip and secrets Taako and Lup shared are shared with Magnus too. Planning secret birthday parties becomes easier.
After the mindwipe Taako is surprised when Magnus understands the elvish he mutters under his breath, and Magnus is surprised as he doesn’t remember ever learning it.
BTW I love your outraged Pidge icon my sweet space daughter
