Cereal #169: Baby Shark
Friends, this is an important day. I have my cereal unicorn.
Allow me to explain.
For the last forty-seven years, I have spent a decent amount of time obsessing over cereal. At least, more time thinking about cereal than 99% of the people on earth.
When I was a kid, there was one shiny beacon in the cereal aisle...the one box that never failed to let me down...the one flavor that, even to this day, drives me to the pinnacle of my cereal limits.
Kaboom.
It's Kaboom.
For the uninitiated, Kaboom was this cereal that lined breakfast cereal shelves throughout much of the late 70s and early 80s. It had a clown on the box, and even though I detest clowns with nearly every fiber of my being, I cannot deny the sheer superpower of Kaboom.
The cereal pieces were weird clown faces in all kinds of different colors. AND, there were little marshmallows.
It was it.
In my list of ALL-TIME FAVORITE CEREALS, my #1 is Kaboom.
Period. End of story. Game over.
Thanks for playing Life. Good job, Quisp. We have a winner...it is Kaboom.
So....that brings me to Baby Shark. There it was sitting on a Walmart endcap. I didn’t think much of it actually. In fact, this box has sat in my pantry for the last month.
I figured it said “Berry Fin-tastic” on the box, so I was going to end up with crappy cerealberry flavor.
And then I started eating it. I will say the first couple of bites had a berryish kind of thing, but as I kept eating, the whole profile changed.
This was not cerealberry.
This bowl started to taste like Kaboom.
KABOOM!
Original Kaboom.
Here’s the thing. The original Kaboom had this sort of flavor that was its own kind of thing. It might have been a bit fruity. There may have been some berry in there. It was something...and it was magical.
Then in the late 90s, the cereal chemists at General Mills changed the Kaboom formula. While decent...totally not the same thing. Eventually, they phased out Kaboom and the cereal bits became Fruity Cheerios minus the marshmallows.
Now, I know this Baby Shark is Kellogg’s brainchild and Kaboom was General Mills. I know that this is not the Kaboom formula. But I am telling you on my cereal eating life, this stuff tastes the same as the ORIGINAL 1980s KABOOM. The milk even turned a weird shade of gray like the original Kaboom.
<me>mind blown</me>
I could eat this cereal every day and not get sick of it.
I don't even care that it says “Baby Shark” on the outside of the box.
I was hoping that this wasn’t going to be another Kellogg’s Play-Doh flavored catastrophe and instead, I end up with the cereal that they should have actually called UNICORNS!
Five bowls out of five.
In fact, I am going to do something I have never done before.
Friends, today, I am going to give out the once-in-a-lifetime, super golden, Cereal Diet magical sixth bowl.
You heard right, SIX GOLDEN BOWLS OUT OF FIVE.
Buy it.
Eat it.
Love it.
And say a special thanks to Kaboom, because I guarantee whoever at Kellogg’s came up with this cereal was a Kaboom fan through and through.
So Awesome!
