Chapter 1
Chapter 6
Breakfast was over and we all walked to the pit. There stood Four with a large board behind him. Our ranks. I don’t feel to excited though. Eric hugged me with one arm in a reassuring way. I let out a breath I forgot I was holding in. “You have 1 more week to bring your rankings up. It will be hard, but not impossible. I suggest if you are one of the bottom tens you get your shit together real quick.” Four explained. “This week we are going to be working on mental preparations. How you would react when confronted with your fears. Today though, You all will have one last fight and practice shooting again before lunch. After lunch we are going to show you what to expect.” Eric said in a loud menacing voice. Everyone just nodded. Four then moved away from the board. My heart almost jumped out of my chest. 1: Kai 2: Tris 3: Peter I sighed with relief. Eric pulled me even closer. “Do you think you can fight today?” He whispered concerned. “Probably. Either way I’m still going to fight. I am not going to risk my spot. Even if I do hurt myself more you said this is our last fight so I have nothing to worry about.” I explained. He thought about it for a minute then nodded, “Alright.” He said. “I’ll see you later. I have to be your instructor now.” He said. I nodded and walked away. I stood in the crowd as the first fight started. Izzy and Maddie. I smiled to myself knowing that there is no way Maddie will be able to win against Izzy. Their fight didn’t last long. It was fast and simple. The walked in circles for a while, then Maddie threw the first punch. Izzy dodged it and body slammed Maddie into the ground. Maddie groaned loudly, and before she was able to get up and continue fighting, Izzy punched her in the side of the head making Maddie pass out. Most of the fights ended quickly and were boring. Then, it was my turn. I was against Peter. Great. I walked up to the ring the same time as Peter. We got into our stances. “Let’s not have a repeat of last night.” He said. “No this time it will be one on one. You won’t have your little friends to protect you this time.” I smiled. “You won’t have your boyfriend to save you this time.” He said. “I don’t need him to protect me. I was able to beat your ass before and I am able to do now.” I said and threw the first punch. He dodged it. He threw the second and aimed for my face. I ducked and punched him in the abdomen. He doubled over. I swung my fist and it collided with the side of his head. He fell to the ground. I fell to my knees next to him and continued punching him. Over and over and over. He was moaning and pleading for me to stop. “Kai. Kai that’s enough.” I heard Four yell. “No.” I yelled and punched him again. I felt arms wrap around my waist pulling me away. “Kai. Stop.” Four said pulling me away. Tears started running down my face. “No.” I muttered. Eric walked up and I pushed Four away. Eric grabbed me from Four. “No.” I stood there next to Eric. Four walked everyone to the shooting range leaving Eric and I alone in the pit. “I don’t regret what I just did. I do, however, regret how I’ve been handling everything.” I muttered into his chest. “Shhh. It’s alright. You’ll be ok.” He said trying to calm me down. “It won’t be ok and neither will I, but I can pretend to be ok. I will pretend to be ok until the day that I am ok.” I said. “We should go.” Eric nodded quietly and we walked to the shooting range. I picked up the gun and pointed it to the target. I managed to fire all of the bullets and made each one hit the center of the target. Eric stared at me. He knew I could shoot well, but he seemed concerned. I reloaded the gun and continued at it. I moved to another set of targets. They were farther away and shaped like people. I continued to shoot. Over and over again. I felt a hand on my shoulder and I turned around to see Eric. Everyone else was gone. “Kai. It’s time to go. Please.” He said concerned. I nodded and set the gun down. We walked together to the cafeteria for lunch. Where I didn’t even eat anything. I sat there with my fork pushing the food around. Eric sighed. I barely even looked up. “Kai. What’s wrong?” He asked. “Nothing.” I mumbled. That wasn’t really a lie either. The truth was I didn’t know what was wrong. I’ve been thinking about Daniel lately. Wondering if he knew. Did they visit him too. They weren’t my actual parents, but I don’t know what to consider them. I mean they didn’t even act like parents to me. Eric nodded, “Alright.” He mumbled. “I don’t know what’s wrong. It’s just everything happened so fast. I’m still processing what happened. I’ll be fine Eric I promise.” I whispered. He nodded again, “Just talk to me if you need to.” He explained. I nodded. We sat there until it was time to leave. We walked to another part of the compound. “This is where you will find out and live through each and every one of your fears. You will learn to work through them. You won’t know that you’re in a simulation, yet.” Four explained. “You will be given the fear serum. Each person will have a different time. Your rank will depend on your time and how long it takes to figure a way out. Your fear will change once your heart slows back down to normal.” Eric explained in his loud deep voice. Everyone simply nodded. Eric and Four walked into two separate rooms. They were there for about 5 minutes, then started calling out names. They continued calling other people for a while. I was at the end like usual. Four stepped out the same time as Eric. “Kai Waters” Four announced. I stood up. I saw Eric glance our way, then call someone else. I walked into the room with Four. It was set up the same way as the aptitude test. I walked in and sat down. “This one is a little different than the aptitude test. It involves each and every one of your fears. I also hope that needles aren’t one of your fears.” He said and before I could ask him what he meant he pulled out a long needle. I sighed, “I guess I’m not.” I muttered. He cleaned off my neck and pushed the needle in. He removed the needle, “You have 30 seconds before it takes action.” He explained. I nodded. He set the needle down and typed away at the computer. Then, everything started to disappear. I looked around and saw that I was stranded in the middle of the ocean. No land in sight. My heart was racing. I was about to start swimming when I saw a dark shadow move underneath me. I held my breath. Whatever this thing was it was huge. Then, not to far from me a huge whale jumped out of the water. No. Okay. I need to slow my heart rate down. I took a deep breath. I tried to slow my breathing. Nothing was working. I tried to swim, but there was no where to go. There was only one way to slow my heart down at this point. I decided to stop swimming. I started to sink. Down further and further. I wasn’t able to see the water surface anymore. My lungs started to burn. My chest felt as if it has been set on fire. My whole body ached. Then, everything disappeared. Wherever I was now was dark. Dark and dry. It was soft too, but confined. I felt around me. There was a wall on both sides of me and in front of me. Great. Buried alive. I started breathing rapidly. What do I do? I tried scratching at the sides. All that did was hurt my fingers. I pushed against the top. It creaked a little. I managed to turn so I was lying on my stomach. I pressed my back to the top and pushed as hard as I could. It crackled more and finally gave way. It wasn’t buried deep. I was able to stick my hand straight through the little bit of dirt that rested on top. I managed to dig myself out. I pulled myself out and fell onto the grass next to it. I stared at the sky until my heart calmed down to a more normalized pace. Then, I was standing in a dark room. In front of me stood Daniel, and in my hand sat a small hand gun. I looked at the gun and back up at Daniel. I shook my head no. “It’s ok, Kai” He said with a small smile. “No. I won’t do it.” I said shaking my head. “Kai, you have no choice.” He said, “and remember none of this is real. You don’t even have to look.” “Daniel. I won’t do it.” I said. “Yes you will. Kai, I believe in you. You’ll be fine. This isn’t real.” He said again. “It still feels real.” I mumbled. “Yes. Kai, in life things will feel real, but that doesn’t mean it is.” He said. I nodded. I undid the safety of the gun and clicked a bullet into place. I pointed it at Daniel. My finger resting on the trigger. Then, I turned the gun and shot myself. That was the end of my third fear. Then, I stood on top of a large building. The wind starting to pick up. I walked over to the side of the building and looked down. I had to be at least 20 stories high. There was an old fire escape on the other side. It was old and barely hanging there. It was the best chance I had. I looked up to see storm clouds quickly rolling my way. I turned and ran towards the other side of the building where the fire escape was. I slowly started to climb onto it. It was creaking loudly. One wrong move and this whole thing will fall to the ground. Slowly I started to climb down it. It creaked with every move I made. I was almost halfway down when the creaks got louder and it started to sway to the side. I grabbed onto a nearby window ledge. The same moment I grabbed the ledge the whole fire escape fell. Luckily the window happened to be open. I pulled myself through the window. I stood up and looked out the window. The fire escape was in a million pieces below. I turned and walked out of the room. To my concern the room happened to be on fire. Great. The fire blazed around me. I tucked and rolled through the door. I was now standing in a long burning hallway. I ran towards the stairs. Pieces of the ceiling started falling around me. I didn’t have long before the whole building collapsed. I sprinted towards the stairs and busted through the door. I jumped over the first railing onto the stairs below and continued to run down them as fast a possible. I got about 5 stories down. I had about 3-4 stories left when I came to a stop. The stairs had things stacked all over it where I couldn’t go any further. I turned and ran up to the door that lead out into the hall. I slammed open the door to feel a rush of heat. I sprinted down the hall. At the end of the hall was an elevator. I grabbed the doors and tried to pry them open. The metal was getting hotter. I managed to pry the doors open enough where I could squeeze through. I ripped two long strips off the bottom of my shirt and wrapped it around my hands. I then, squeezed through the doors and grabbed the cable. I slowly started climbing down the cable. The bottom wasn’t too far away. My hands and arms started aching. I eventually made it down. Next, I heard a loud creaking sound. Seriously. I pried open the door and right as I squeezed through there was a loud snap and the elevator was lying right where I was just seconds before. I let out a deep breath of air. I could see the exit from where I was. I looked down the hallway and saw flames rolling quickly my way. I sprinted, once again, towards the exit. I smashed through the doors as the whole building burst into flames and started crumbling to the ground. I stood there panting for air. Finally I gained my breath and I woke up back in the chair. “Do you know how long that took you?” Four asked. “I don’t know. Like 2 hours maybe.” I shrugged. “No. More like 15 minutes.” He said. “Kai. We really need to talk.” “No. We don’t. I don’t see why you people can’t just leave me alone for a few days. Between you and your little girl friend I can’t get any peace.” I muttered and stood up. I almost fell over, but he grabbed my arm stabling me. “Kai. Please just talk to me.” He pleaded. “What? Let me guess Eric, my boyfriend, and Jeanine, my mother, are planning some evil plan to destroy divergents.” I said sarcastically. “Did he mention anything about it to you?” Four asked confused. “No. Your girlfriend did though.” I muttered and yanked my arm away. “Kai. If he is can you talk to him please.” Four pleaded. “No, and whatever he plans on doing I will stick by his side.” I said and walked out of the room. Leaving Four standing there alone and confused and slightly angry.
