Why her and not me?!

Kaidan found it when he went back to the apartment after the Citadel was declared safe. He’d gone to remember, to see if anything survived - not items but atmosphere, the feel of the last owner, the last party, the joy and family that had been here. The box was still in the armour and weapons locker, untouched; he’d had to force the door fully open with biotics to check it was clear and there it had been, a small dark spot in the back corner. It was instinct that had made him slip it inside his armour for later, an instinct that he realised he had been right to listen to once he was back on board the Normandy, sitting on the bed they had shared, this small velveteen box in his hands. He’d known before opening it what was inside but seeing it, untarnished and glimmering in the faint glow of auxiliary power, made his chest feel like it was trying to contain an atom bomb - the pain hit his heart so hard. It was something he wished he had thought of because the symbolism of it had fit so well - elements so diverse yet bonded together in one piece of strength and beauty, just like… He didn’t really think about what he was doing; it simply felt right. He’d been wed from the moment he’d stepped back onto the ship, before Apollo’s even, and never admitted it. Shepard was never coming back…but as long as he lived, Kaidan wore the Victory ring on the ring finger of his left hand. And no one ever asked why.
